PICKS OF THE WEEK:

In-Market Activities with the Programs Krewe

Come visit the Programs Krewe as we will be in markets providing activities and education to shoppers, with topics ranging from getting acquainted with the five food groups to healthy alternatives to fresh produce. Thanks to the support from the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, we are able to tailor best practices from SNAP- ED to fit our unique space. Here’s a sample of what’s in store (market).

Our vendors save the season by offering frozen, canned, and even dried produce. For example, you can find frozen blueberries nearly year round as well as a variety of dried fruits, vegetables, and herbs at CCFM markets. We love seeing you at the market, but we understand life happens and you may not be able to always get to us. Frozen, canned, and dried fruits and vegetables can be a convenient, cost-effective alternative. Bonus: they also help eliminate food waste! Whether you purchase at the market or your local grocer, just keep in mind that the most nutritious produce is when it is consumed in its most natural form, without added sugar and salt and in its one or 100% juice.

We’re Hiring!

We are in the market for a Director of Development and Communications. This newly created full-time staff position is responsible for leading the fundraising and communications activities of Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Markets. See full details here!

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

Powers Beekeepers

Meet the Powers! Terry and Dani Powers have been bringing their honey to our markets for over three years now, and have been producing honey for over seven years. Between their locations in Algiers and Belle Chasse, Louisiana, the Powers take care of a total of 150 hives from which they produce pure, raw, and unfiltered honey. Alongside their 100% natural honey, Powers Beekeepers produces comb honey, beeswax, pollen, and beeswax candles made in a variety of beautiful and unique molds. Interested in beekeeping yourself? The Powers also teach a beginners beekeeping class at Sugar Roots Farm and sell nucleus hives - a small but established colony that's perfect for kick starting a new beehive. Come this March, expect to see pollen back on Power’s market table alongside their weekly array of honey products.

KING CAKE OF THE WEEK:

King Cakes by Passion Flour Baked Goods

Jade and Ryder, the owners and bakers of Passion Flour Baked Goods, never fail to surprise us with their unique, innovative, and funky spins on traditional pastries and baked goods. It’s no surprise that their king and queen cakes are no different! If you are looking for something that veers from the traditional brioche king cake, grab a slice of their Blackberry Nutmeg Mascarpone King Cake, Rose Pistachio Almond King Cake, or Pistachio Cookie Butter King Cake. Inspired by their time in France, Ryder and Jade have also developed a Chestnut Sweet Cream Queen Cake, which is based on the French dessert Mont Blanc. Pre-order their king cakes here to be picked up at market or try it by the slice at market Thursday and Tuesday!

For many, 2021 was another challenging year. With the loss of loved ones, physical illness, and economic and social disruption, the COVID-19 pandemic caused many of us to face stress, loneliness, anxiety and depression.

But the new year is a chance for new opportunities, new goals and a fresh start. It comes as no surprise that more than one in four Americans are focusing their 2022 New Year’s resolutions on their mental wellbeing. As you celebrate with friends and loved ones and share in the hope of all the good to come, now is a great time to reflect on the past year and think about ways to prioritize and improve your mental wellbeing in the months ahead.

In December, we shared tips from the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) curriculum to help you cope with loneliness and to support loved ones during and after the holiday season, and we shared information to prepare you for a healthy new year. As you transition into 2022, we hope you turn to MHFA as a guide to help you focus on your mental wellbeing. You can use your MHFA skills and knowledge to support a life devoted to wellbeing in yourself and those around you.

We’re continuing to share daily information and tips on our blog and social media channels – follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram!
