Uptown Detour, and Fresh Pecans! | December 6, 2021

FRESH & LOCAL: Uptown Detour, and Fresh Pecans! PEE-can or puh-KAHN? This age-old debate can leave family members frustrated over slices of pie at the table. Pecans, the only native tree nut in North America, were consumed and even traded as currency by Native Americans. The origins of the name can be traced to the Algonquin word “pacane” (/pa.kan/), a word used to describe all nuts “requiring a stone to crack.” In the 18th and 19th century, African American cooks working in colonist kitchens took the French praline and gave it a NOLA twist. Pecans replaced the traditional French almond, and milk was added, resulting in the sweet and creamy patty we love today: the New Orleans signature pecan candy, pralines! Fall is harvest time for this protein and fiber-packed nut, and you can adorn your holiday table with fresh whole or cracked nuts and pick up shelled ones for easy recipe incorporation at any CCFM market at this time of year. Producers like the Indian Springs Farmers Association, L’Hoste Citrus, Veggi Farmers Co-Operative and others are coming with plenty.

Greenway Supernova is This Week! We’ve partnered with the Friends of Lafitte Greenway for Supernova 2021! On Thursday Dec. 9th, our Mid-City Market will have extended hours from 3pm to 9pm and will come alive with the magic of the holidays. Featuring 12 luminary art installations, live music, a holiday arts market, prepared food vendors and so much more. VENDOR OF THE WEEK: Indian Springs Farmers Association It’s pecan season! While pecans are most famously used for your holiday pies, the options for consumption are endless - seriously, look up recipes using pecans and tell me your mouth isn’t watering! Pecans make for a delicious addition to any salad, fish, chicken, side dish, or sweet treat. Toasting them first helps enhance their sweet, buttery taste. Our long-time vendor Indian Springs Farmers Association, a cooperative made up of 30+ small, black-owned farms from Mississippi, brings shelled pecans from a co-op member to all three CCFM markets, and are often featured in the CCFM home delivery box around this time of year. You can expect to see pecans at their market table for the next few months - start saving your recipes for all the ways you can use pecans now!

RECIPES OF THE WEEK: Pecan Pie Bars These pecan pie bars are simply magic! Between the brown sugar shortbread crust and the honey-infused pecan pie topping, these bars will have you hooked. FRESH & LOCAL: Give Thanks Market Umbrella has worked hard this year to address growing food insecurity in our community, which has only been exacerbated by the pandemic and Hurricane Ida, by expanding our Market Match program. Market Match provides dollar-for-dollar matching to hundreds of customers using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) each year. Over the last 12 months, nearly $200,000 in SNAP transactions were processed through the Crescent City Farmers Markets and our Market Match partners, and over $140,000 in additional direct incentives were distributed to these families in need - putting those dollars in the pockets of local food producing small businesses while also putting food on the tables of hundreds of local families. “Being able to use SNAP to buy fresh and healthy produce - and have those purchases matched - has been an amazing resource for our family. We can support local farmers, and stay within our budget at the same time. It feels great to be able to help our community while we are just makin’ groceries,” one Market Match shopper recently shared. PICKS OF THE WEEK: Native American Heritage Day Friday, November 26th, is Native American Heritage Day, and while many of us enjoy this time of the year to share good food with good people, it is important to remember the origins of Thanksgiving and what that means to the Indigenous people of the land we all love.

Before colonists arrived, Native peoples were already in the practice of celebrating the autumn harvest, with gratitude and thankfulness being core values across different tribes. Once settlers did arrive, their original “Thanksgivings” were actually celebratory fasting periods, oftentimes recognizing battle victories such as the Pequot massacre. The cozy, “Pilgrim + Indian'' story of unity is an insult to many, and while Native people have various perspectives on the holiday, for some it remains a day of mourning. In New Orleans, where 0.7% of the population identifies as having Native ancestry, we have the Mardi Gras Indians--a culture born out of the marriage of local Indigenous tribes and African Americans who escaped enslavement. Our friend Jeremy Oatis of Pickled NOLA masks with the Original Wild Tchoupitoulas as the Trail Chief, and in his words, “The Mardi Gras tradition is a way to pay homage and respect to the many different Indigenous tribes that sheltered runaway slaves and protected them being recaptured, sent back into bondage, and sometimes being killed.” The songs, chants, and traditional dress are a beautiful blend of African and Native cultures, a reminder of the rich New Orleanian history we are all a part of.

Cajun Seafood Mac and Cheese If you love mac n’ cheese, then you have to try this Cajun Seafood Mac and Cheese! Plenty of fresh shrimp and crab meat blended with cheesy deliciousness create the perfect side or even main dish.

Louisiana Collard Greens This collard green recipe is loaded with flavor! It’s slightly smoky, salty, vinegary, and so savory! The broth is rich, and the greens are so tender after simmering away in all of those flavors.

Southern Sweet Potato Pie This creamy sweet potato pie is perfectly spiced and slices beautifully! Add a dollop of whipped cream and this southern dessert will make for a memorable dish.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK: Pete and Clara’s Seafood As everyone scrambles to figure out who is going to cook the turkey or get the honey baked ham, here in Louisiana we like to celebrate the holidays the creole-cajun way-- with seafood! If you are looking for some last minute additions to your holiday meals, head over to our Tuesday Uptown Market where you will find Pete and Clara’s Seafood selling an array of fresh fin fish, like drum and catfish, along with crab and fresh shrimp when it’s available. The Gericas have been with the Crescent City Farmers Market since its inception and are an essential part of our community. Try their fresh picked crab meat and shrimp in a Cajun Mac N Cheese or in Seafood Stuffed Mirlitons. And don’t forget to come early!

FRESH & LOCAL: Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes Just a reminder that the Sunday market now offers walk up sales from 8 am to noon. The drive through pickup option ended in October, and we have changed our shopping options to better suit your needs based on feedback we received from shoppers in a recent survey. With our two convenient preorder options through WhatsGood, you can still do your meal planning and shop ahead to reserve products and either pick up orders directly from vendors or choose the new curbside option available for the duration of market. The preorder window opens on Wednesday and closes on Friday at 11:59 pm. Not all vendors participate in preorders, so if you’re looking online for something you’re not finding, you can always check our website to find out who will be at market. We have options for everyone and can’t wait to see you bright and early at the market!

PICKS OF THE WEEK: Farmers Market Smokeout: Marjie’s Grill & Mawi Tortillas Marjie’s Grill & Mawi Tortillas are combining forces for a special one-time collaborative meal to benefit the Crescent Fund, which provides support for CCFM vendors recovering from Hurricane Ida. They will be serving up a special ‘smokeout’ meal available at the Mid-City Farmers Market located on the Lafitte Greenway at 500 N. Norman C. Francis Pkwy. on Thursday, November 11 from 3-7 pm (or until food sells out!). The menu will feature smoked Laos style sausage or beef ribs with Mawi tortillas, gallo pinto, and crystal mojo sauce; locally sourced and delicious veggie options available. $15 suggested donation. Let’s eat!

Redeem FMNP Vouchers Each year, the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) - a USDA-funded program administered by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry - provides vouchers to thousands of low-income senior citizens, as well as mothers participating in WIC, to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables with certified local vendors at area farmers markets including all the Crescent City Farmers Market locations. November 30th, 2021 marks the last day to redeem current issued WIC FMNP and Senior FMNP vouchers for the 2021 calendar year. This year, thanks to the support of generous donors, Market Umbrella is able to offer bonus bucks to shoppers who present their FMNP booklets at the Welcome Tent of any Crescent City Farmers Market location. Support from Fairlife allows senior shoppers to round their $24 worth of vouchers up to $30 and receive $6 in cash-value tokens. Support from Cox allows WIC mothers to match their $24 in vouchers dollar-for-dollar for an extra $24 of cash-value tokens. Bonus tokens can be redeemed for any items at market - including dairy and protein!

Last call for Coffee Vendors! Here at CCFM we are extremely excited to be working towards adding a full time coffee vendor to our markets. After many years of preparing and selling coffee from the Welcome Tent, we are happy to offer this opportunity to a small-scale coffee producer to sell beans and beverages at our markets. VENDOR OF THE WEEK: Monica’s Okra World Starting off as roadside sellers and then joining CCFM as regular vendors 25 years ago, the Monicas of Monica’s Okra World have definitely lived the ups and downs of being a Louisiana farming family. Their okra has been flying off the shelves since they began stocking it at the Garyville General Store, and they were making home deliveries throughout the Crescent City until Hurricane Katrina. As versatile and nostalgic as okra is, kale is the star of the show during this part of the fall season, and strong bunches of the sturdy greens are overflowing their table next to mustard greens and cabbage. High in vitamins and iron, kale can help keep your energy high during the upcoming winter months. So go buy some okra, kale, and other hearty seasonal veggies like radishes, green onions, and bok choy from our longtime friends the Monicas to keep yourself active and alert as November rolls on.
