The Hawaii Democrat gave the defining speech against the GOP bill, weeks after a titanium plate was put in her ribcage.
As she sat in the Senate, readying a final speech against the Republican Party’s last-ditch attempt to repeal Obamacare, Mazie Hirono’s (D-HI) thoughts drifted to her torso.
A month earlier, she’d undergone surgery stemming from a kidney cancer diagnosis. Doctors took out her seventh rib and with it a tumor. In place of bone was now a 7-inch long titanium plate screwed to the rib’s remaining ends.
