On the morning of June 18, 1983, Sally Ride took the ride of her life
Not long after the sun had risen over the horizon, Ride and four male astronauts blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., aboard the space shuttle Challenger. The five-member crew spent six days in space circling Earth. They launched two satellites and performed a number of science experiments. But it was Ride who made the mission historic: At the age of 32, she became the first American woman to fly in space.
