Fresh & Local:

Tuesday Market - As Seen by a High School Junior

Wow! Spring has surely sprung and along has sprung so many fruits and vegetables, some of my favorites being delicious strawberries and sugar snap peas. The market was full of flowers, herbs, and beautiful green produce. This one farmer had tomatoes grown in water and another had duck eggs! All of the bright colors and blooming flowers brought me back to my mom’s garden. Spring time was the best as a kid… digging in the dirt, playing with the worms, the smell of sweet pea in the air. My mom would love the huge spread of flower and vegetable starts to plant in the backyard.
I started my day with a cup of iced coffee, a breakfast burrito, and a chocolate croissant from the advice man with big cookies. There was also an amazing food truck popping up for lunch which had the best tacos with cotija and salsa verde. Everyone at the market was really nice and I felt very welcomed. We were fortunate to have lovely weather and a fun folk band playing some tunes. My days at market are always great, and last week was no exception!

Picks of the Week:

21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge

Both in the work we do and in the way we do our work, Market Umbrella is dedicated to identifying and confronting racial inequity in our city and in our food system. From internal staffing to supporting underserved and underrepresented producer and customer groups, we actively work to address institutional racism within our food system, which in New Orleans and the south, has a rich history indeed. As a staff, we will be embarking on the 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge, along with others throughout the country by taking the time to reflect and share our thoughts on daily prompts provided by Food Solutions New England. Please join us in working to normalize conversations about the role of racism in shaping our food systems from April 2nd-22nd.

One Bean to Rule Them All!

The Krewe of Red Beans presents the 2nd annual “Bean Madness” - a single-elimination tournament of 57 New Orleans chefs and restaurants to see who makes the best red beans in the city!
This Saturday, April 7th at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum is the championship match - everyone who attends is also a judge of the beans! Tickets start at $15 & can be purchased via Eventbrite. Proceeds go to two local non-profits, Anna's Place and Make Music Nola. Live Music by Margie Perez and her Cosa Cubana & DJ Alsky. Beer included in ticket price and a silent bean auction will be available! Who do you think will take home the "Legume D'Or" Trophy? Market Manager Cristina’s bracket says Joey K’s!

Recipe of the Week:

Herbes de Provence & Rose Olive Oil Cake

Our recipe of the week from Local Milk Blog was picked because I literally just made this cake for Easter and it was AMAZING! I picked up my herbs de Provence from Spicy Lady Seasonings, buttermilk from Country Girls Creamery, and made my own rose water from my neighbor’s bushes (shhh…). I even layered in some early peach & rose geranium jam from Jamboree Jams just to be extra fancy. Next time, I am going to make strawberry icing - this cake is super versatile and yummy! 10/10 would make again.
