Summer is on its Way! | May 14, 2018

Fresh & Local:

Summer is on its Way!

We had an actual winter this year followed by a long and pleasant spring, but as these warm days turn hot, we’re starting to get glimpses of the summer ahead of us. Squash was just the beginning and you’ll start seeing that in all shapes, colors and sizes. Eggplant are coming in and multiple sources say peppers are just around the corner. First of the season little wild peaches are around in VERY limited quantities, but are harbingers for the lush peach season we’re expecting to start before the end of the month. Cool down and stay hydrated with cucumbers now, and watermelon (and other melons!) soon. Summer days are long and hot, but we must remember the dog days also bring some of our favorite local produce!

Picks of the Week:

CCFM at Rivertown

Rivertown Market is rolling right along! This weekend saw additional vendors, more produce and additional breakfast and lunch options. The perfect market for later risers, this beautiful market is right on the levee in quaint old Kenner. Come walk the levee trail and check out the majestic Mississippi, sample some seasonal produce and preserves, and pick up some plant starts for your own home garden. Or just cut flowers if that’s more your speed.
Make sure you are following Rivertown Farmers Market social media pages for updates, news, and tons of veggie pics! Facebook 🥕 Instagram

Fungus Amongus

Fungi alert! Keep your eyes open for shiitake mushrooms at the Indian Springs Farmers Association Cooperative table. These rich, meaty ‘shrooms are especially high in vitamin B and very tasty in pretty much everything, making vegetarian dishes savory in the way only mushrooms can. Get them while you can (Tues, Thurs, Sat), they won’t be around for long!

Vendor of the Week:

Timmy Perilloux

What is left to say about our resident farmer vendor Timmy Perilloux? You know the guy, the one with the big truck and even bigger veggies. Mr. Timmy hails from the good ole River Parishes - Montz, Louisiana, right outside of the Bonnet Carre Spillway (where market manager Cristina grew up!) in the rich alluvial soil across from the Mississippi River. You can find upwards of 13 items on his table on any given day, sometimes up to 20 or more - our favorites include: romanesco, golden beets, okra, watermelon, “real” Creole tomatoes, and fresh green onions bunched by grandpa Perilloux. Say hello to him or his helper Dennis at all of our weekly markets.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:

La Monita

Delicious Colombian-inspired food made from locally sourced ingredients, La Monita (Colombian slang for blond girl) returns to the market for another stint as the Green Plate Special on Tuesdays. Inspired by her travels through South and Central America, Tracey Armitage is preparing for us this month incredible arepas, tropical salads, and a Colombian goodness bowl amongst a weekly changing cast of other dishes. Come grab plantains for breakfast or a fish stew for lunch. It’s all delicious!
