Fresh & Local:

Tomato, Tomato

National culinary magazines won’t feature tomato recipes for months but here in the heat of southeastern Louisiana, markets are bursting at the seams with tomatoes in all varieties. We are fortunate to have year round access to tomatoes, with hydroponics providing our winter selections, but right now, field grown creoles and other slicers, heirlooms and cherries are what you’ll find. Take advantage of tomatoes now and beat the heat with caprese or panzanella salads or gazpacho. Try a low acid Carolina Gold from Poche Family Farm, a sweet rich Cherokee Purple from LA Growers’ Co-Op, or mix your own pint of cherry tomatoes with a multitude of heirlooms from Accardo’s Gourmet Produce. The creole controversy rages on, but you can take your pick from several vendors to see which you prefer. That intense tomato taste we collectively reminisce about? That comes from picking fruit ripe from the vine, which only a local grower can do. And your local grower is choosing varieties for characteristics like flavor and texture, not shelf stability for shipping. We had a pleasant spring but this intense heat could bring tomato season to an early close, so enjoy them while you can.

Picks of the Week:

Baby Food Demo

Want to avoid the diminished nutrition of processed foods for your baby, but intimidated by the prospect of making your own? Join us this Saturday (CBD) to learn how surprisingly easy it is and you’ll never go back to store bought. Hosted by Crescent City Farmers Market as part of the Eat Local Challenge which challenges you to go 30 days in June eating only foods grown, caught, raised or foraged within a 200 mile radius of New Orleans to raise awareness of the nutritional, economical, environmental and cultural benefits of eating locally sourced foods. Get your baby on board, too!

Crescent Fund for Penn Travis

We recently lost one of our beloved vendors, Donnie “Penn” Travis of Indian Springs Farmers Association Cooperative. Mr. Penn was an important part of our market and an absolute treasure in our hearts. If you’d like to make a donation to the family, we will be accepting them through the Crescent Fund. Click here to donate. All donations will go to the family.

Vendor of the Week:

Durham Produce

Brenda Durham and family have been coming to New Orleans from Chilton County, Alabama for 28 years with peaches and other stone fruit. In all those years, she’s never missed her market start date until this year when at the last minute, tropical storm Alberto that we here in New Orleans were all gearing up for a couple of weeks ago suddenly took a turn and headed for Alabama. Unlike our Cherry Creek Orchard friends to the north who lost their entire crop in a late freeze this year, the Durhams were largely unaffected by the storm. With dripping chins and juices running from wrists to elbows, we gladly welcome peaches, plums and nectarines into our summer. Find them at Tuesday, Thursday, and both Saturday markets.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:

South of Eden

South of Eden is a plant based pop-up and new CCFM vendor. Founded in the belief that food should be tasty, satisfying and nourishing, everything on offer is created to be just that. As the Green Plate Special vendor, we’ll be treated to breakfast and lunch made from entirely whole ingredients (no processed ingredients will be found in any item), locally sourced when possible. You can also pick up vegan breads, sauces, cheeses, dips, jams, ferments and more at the GPS table in June, and then at their regular market table at the Tuesday Uptown Market beginning in July. What a great addition to the market!

Zucchini Baby Food Puree

Can’t make it in time to the Saturday CBD market for the Eat Local Challenge baby food demo? No worries! Try this zucchini recipe from Hankys Happy Home that only contains one ingredient - you guessed it, zucchini! Any variety of squash works, and you can mix and match. As you add more ingredients to your little one’s repertoire, you can add herbs like basil or mint to develop their palette and increase nutrition.
