FRIDAY NIGHTS AT NOMA: Meet the photographer of War on the Benighted series, watch Mr. Cao Goes to Washington documentary
NOMA continues to draw critical praise for Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories, and this Friday night we offer a lineup of programs related to this multifaceted and multicultural exhibition. Meet photographer L. Kasimu Harris, who will discuss the themes in his photography series, War on the Benighted. In Stern Auditorium, watch the documentary Mr. Cao Goes to Washington, the story of attorney Joseph Cao's rise from child war refugee to the first Vietnamese-American elected to Congress in 2009, representing metro New Orleans as a Republican. At Café NOMA, the Artful Palate cooking demonstrations continue with a chef preparing beignets. Arrive early and stay late for Friday Nights at NOMA:

Every Friday through August 24, chefs of the Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group demonstrate their own culinary masterpieces at Café NOMA's "Artful Palate," the annual summer cooking series featuring artfully inspired demonstrations at the New Orleans Museum of Art. In conjunction with the launch of Changing Course:  Reflections on New Orleans Histories, the talented executive chefs and sous chefs of Café NOMA, Ralph's on the Park, Red Fish Grill, Brennan's, and Napoleon House will share culinary visions inspired by the exhibit, which will commemorate the past and look to the future by offering a contemporary twist on iconic New Orleans dishes. View the full lineup of Artful Palate programming at the Café NOMA website.
MUJERES DE CINE FILM SERIES continues with Most Beautiful Island

Saturday, July 28, 2 pm

The Mujeres de Cine Film Series, featuring motion pictures made by contemporary female Spanish directors, continues with Most Beautiful Island, a psychological thriller set in the world of undocumented workers hoping to make a life in New York City. The film chronicles one harrowing day in the life of Luciana, a young woman struggling to make ends meet and escape her past. She inadvertently finds herself a participant in a cruel game where lives are placed at risk. Spanish with English subtitles. (Not rated | 2017 | 1 hour, 20 minutes) Watch the trailer

Join Curators and Docents for Small Talks and Noontime Talks

Small Talks are a new addition to the lineup of programs at NOMA. These 10- to 15-minute discussions focus on a single object or small range of objects within the permanent collection or special exhibitions. This week join us for the following:
 
Wednesday, July 25, 11 am: Curatorial Fellow Brian Piper will discuss the works of L. Kasimu Harris on view as part of Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories.  
 
Saturday, July 28, 11 am: Art handler Todd Rennie will discuss Odili Donald Odita's Forever. 
 
Saturday, July 28, 3 pm: Docent Diane Finley will provide an overview of Dutch Art in the Golden Age. 
 
Wednesday, August 1, 3 pm: View two restored 16th-century Venetian altarpieces with docent Marilyn Kopan, on view in Veronese in Murano.
 
Noontime Talks are casual conversations frequently scheduled throughout the year between artists, curators, and other special guests with NOMA visitors.  
 
Wednesday, July 25, 12 pm: Curatorial Fellow Kelsey Brosnan will offer historical background on Charles Joseph Natoire's The Toilet of Psyche.
 
Wednesday, August 1, 12 pm: Curator Russell Lord guides visitors through Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories.
From Newborns to Three-Year-Olds, BABY ARTSPLAY! Invites NOMA'S Youngest Vistors to a Stimulating Saturday Morning at the Museum

Instill a love of art at an early age through a guided, hands-on experience. Young Audiences Wolf Trap teaching artists will present a series of six workshops on Saturday mornings for children ages 0-3 and their caregivers. NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Mindfulness Classes: Back By Popular Demand!  

This fall NOMA presents a series of eight mindfulness classes. Mindfulness is defined as experiencing the present moment with open curiosity, without judgment, and with a willingness to be with what is. Mindfulness training teaches skills to help individuals:
  • Cope with the stress, pain, and challenges of everyday life
  • Deal with disturbing events with grace and composure
  • Be present and alive in the here and now.
About mindfulness classes at NOMA
This eight-part mindfulness series will be held on Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. beginning August 25. Classes will take place August 25, September 1, 8, 22, 29, October 6, 13, and 20. There will be no class on September 15.

Active-Duty Military and Families Admitted FREE for Summer   

Valid through Monday, September 3
 
NOMA is proud to be a Blue Star Museum. In collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 participating museums nationwide, active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, are granted free admission from now through Labor Day, September 3.
NOMA Book Club to Discuss Efforts to Save Art in World War II-Era France

Join NOMA staff and fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art, artists, art museums, NOMA's collections and exhibitions. See the 2018 schedule and reading list here. 
 
NOTE: The Book Club will meet in NOMA's board room on the second floor during the July session due to construction near the museum's ground-floor library.
 
The selection for July is Lisette's List by Susan Vreeland, an historical novel that involves a French couple's efforts to hide art from invading German troops during World War II. 
 
Book Club members may join in a group discussion about the book on Friday, July 27, from 11:30 - 1 pm, which will include a special potluck lunch and the debut of the reading selections for 2019.

NOMA's annual fall soirée beneath the moss-draped oaks of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be held on Friday, September 28. Presented by Hancock Whitney, the gala features live music, cuisine from over 60 restaurants, the LOVE Cocktail Challenge, and honors four artists: John Alexander, Katrina Andry, Luis Cruz Azaceta, and L. IN THE WEEKS AHEAD at NOMA 
 
Docent guided tours of the collection or special exhibitions are offered Tuesdays through Sundays at 1 pm. 
 
Friday, August 3, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA welcomes artist Lesley Dill who will discuss the inspiration behind her installation Hell Hell Hell / Heaven Heaven Heaven: Encountering Sister Gertrude Morgan. The documentary Prejudice & Pride, a chronicle of the UpStairs Lounge Fire of 1973 will be screened, and visitors will be guided through the new exhibition Teaching Beyond Doctrine: Painting and Calligraphy by Zen Masters in the Japanese Art Gallery.
