FRESH & LOCAL:We <3 Farmers Markets
Let’s celebrate Farmers Markets! The Crescent City Farmers Market began in 1995 and has been bringing eaters and producers together in celebration of local food, community, and health ever since. CCFM operates five markets in the Greater New Orleans area and we are home to more than 60 vendors located within 200 miles of New Orleans. Our market has accepted SNAP since 2005 and has been doubling SNAP purchases up to $20 each market since 2008. We incubate small businesses, provide regional and national support, and educate people of all ages about the importance of eating fresh, local food.
Join us at our Tuesday Uptown, Thursday Mid-City, and Saturday CBD markets this week for cooking demos featuring: Chef Marcus Jacobs (one of Louisiana Cookin’s 2018 Chefs to Watch) of Marjie’s Grill, Chef Aaron Burgau (a King of Louisiana Seafood winner and James Beard award nominee) of Crescent City Barbecue and Patois, and Chef Parvin Macari of Casa Borrega (a 2018 Top Taco New Orleans winner and one of our very favorite Green Plate Special vendors). We’ll also have live music by Aaron Berenson and The Bad Oyster Band, fun contests and market swag (see below), plus all of the amazing food and vendors you love to see at the market.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:VEGGI Farmers Cooperative
Big news for VEGGI! They just submitted their application for Mountain Rose Herbs’ Giving Project who believes that people, plants, and planet are more important than profit. VEGGI currently has land that is not being fully utilized on their farm. It was once used to raise chickens and ducks, but was abandoned due to predators and theft. They plan to clean the vegetation, create a secure perimeter with a natural vegetation barrier of fruit trees and climbing plants, and raise chickens and ducks to incorporate into their organic farming and composting structure. Check out this video to see where VEGGI Farmers Cooperative has come from and where they are going, and donate to help them reach their goal!

TUESDAY’S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:Rimon
New to the Green Plate Special pop-up is restaurant Rimon! Rimon is a kosher, farm-to-table restaurant located inside the gorgeous Hillel building on Tulane’s campus. In Hebrew, Rimon means pomegranate, which symbolizes wisdom and knowledge in the Jewish tradition. With these values in mind, CCFM alum Chef Daniel Esses of Esses Foods, serves up seasonal, local, and delicious food to the Tulane community. Rimon’s eclectic menu features cuisine from all over the world, focusing on Israeli and Korean flavors. Dishes at Rimon are made using pasture-raised beef and lamb, responsibly raised poultry, local gulf fish, and freshly baked bread and pastries. Stop by every Tuesday in August from 9-1pm!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:Smothered Okra And Tomatoes
Are you tired of okra yet? No? Good! Check out this Emerils recipe for smothered okra and tomatoes, a classic in Southern Louisiana cuisine. While some veggies are calling it quits for the summer, okra is abundant and here for the long haul, but that’s okay because it is delicious and nutritious. Pair it with some last of the season tomatoes and you are good to go!
