Welcome persimmons to the market! While there are Louisiana native varieties of persimmon, you’re most likely to find Japanese Fuyu or Tanenashi which have very different characteristics from each other. Both are typically a red orange when ripe, Fuyu - the squat, almost square type - can be eaten when firm much like an apple, while a Tanenashi or Hachiya - the heart shaped variety with the point at the bottom - are inedibly astringent until they ripen to a pudding-like consistency. The arguably more likable persimmon, Fuyu, is best enjoyed raw but can also be cooked down like in the featured recipe below. The skin is edible, but if you don't like it, feel free to peel it. We recently served a raw persimmon salad with balsamic and basil at a Krewe de Lose session and it was a big hit! Pick some up from Screaming Oaks Farm on Thursday or J&D Farms this Saturday!

Breaking the Fast
Yom Kippur is arguably the most important day of the year for Jews around the world. Usually spent fasting, praying, and reflecting, Yom Kippur marks a fresh start to a new year. But there also comes an inevitable time during the fasting day when many find themselves daydreaming about food. Being stuck in services all day, minds may wander off into the break fast abyss-- tables crowded with bagels and lox, quiches, and perhaps a fruit salad made up of fresh watermelon and cantaloupe from the farmers market. This year Yom Kippur begins on Tuesday evening and the fast lasts through sundown on Wednesday. Be sure to stock up on all of your necessities like eggs, bread, fresh fruit, and more on Tuesday morning at the Uptown market to ensure a delicious and satisfying breaking of the fast.

See Ya Later Alligator
Kids tired of chicken nuggets? Looking for a new game day snack to impress your friends? Just need a way to spice up your dinner routine? Try whipping up a batch of fried alligator nuggets with some gator meat from Des Allemands Outlaw Katfish. The meat tastes a lot like chicken, although more firm or chewy depending on the preparation, and pairs great with a remoulade dipping sauce. Get it while you can from Ms. Jeannie at Tuesday’s Uptown market.

Louisiana Farm to School Conference
Timed to celebrate National Farm to School Month in October, the 2018 Louisiana Farm to School Conference is a two-day event which will take place on October 9th and 10th in Baton Rouge. Tuesday afternoon is a grower/buyer meet up from 4-7pm with local growers setting up booths and attendance from the school system and other buyers to see what’s available locally. Growers attend for free so register, and come on out and see what new opportunities await!
Wednesday hosts traditional conference activities with tracks on Sourcing, Growing and Learning for practitioners in any of the three walks of farm to school. Keynote speaker Chef Ann Cooper, the “Renegade Lunch Lady” should not be missed. Hope to see you there!

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Isabel Mendez
After a brief hiatus to visit family in Mexico, Isabel has returned to the market, much to the delight of anxious tamale-deprived shoppers. Beloved farmer Isabel and the Mendez family grow a variety of items on their farm in Independence, Louisiana year round, and also hand-make the tamales and breakfast burritos fresh before each market. For the time being she is back at Saturday market only. Look for her table full of green beans, peppers, and an array of salsas, and homemade tortilla chips. She'll resume Tuesday market as production on farm picks up. We’ll see you on Saturday for your weekly tamale fix!

TUESDAY’S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:Bua Thai Kitchen
Bua Thai Kitchen will be out at the Green Plate Special tent again this Tuesday! Bua Thai Kitchen offers authentic tastes and experiences of Thailand through creative, healthy plant-based dishes. Inspired by her experience living in Thailand, and by the power of plants, chef Ashley Weinstein Berner creates dishes using local produce. Most items are gluten-free. Everything will be available to go so you can stop by and grab your breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This week’s menu will feature Pad Grapow, Mango Salad, Kanom Jeen Gaang Kio Waan - your choice of rice vermicelli or zucchini noodles, and Thai Iced Coffee.
