Cancer Policy Institute October News

October 2018
Dear Catherine,

There are many reasons to vote and no matter what drives you to the polls on November 6, we want to support you to make sure you are registered, prepared to vote, and know where to cast your ballot. We have an awesome voting website that makes it incredibly easy to click on your state and gather all the information you need to be ready for election day. If you need a little extra motivation, check out our advocate of the month Yovana’s story. She received an unexpected diagnosis of lung cancer at age 35 and has become a fierce advocate for herself and others living with cancer. It is people like Yovana who drive us to do this work every day. Her advocacy is inspiring and we think it’s our responsibility to work side by side with her to ensure that cancer patients and survivors are leading voices in health policy debates.

Happy voting!

Advocate Spotlight: Yovana Portillo, Phoenix, AZ
"If you are passionate about what you are doing it will show in your conversations regardless of whom you are speaking to. Your story matters! And although you might think that one person may not be able to change the world, I can guarantee you that one person can take small steps and make small changes that in the end will definitely result in the bigger goal or bigger picture."

Prepare for Open Enrollment: Nov 2nd to Dec 15th, 2018
As the Midterm Election approaches and many prepare for the holiday season, it’s critical to remember that the open enrollment period to purchase health insurance coverage for 2019 is quickly approaching as well. This is the time to make sure that you and your loved ones have access to comprehensive, quality, and affordable coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
New Transparency Laws Could Help Patients Reduce Out-of-Pocket Drug Spending
President Trump recently signed two bills into law aimed at reducing patients’ out-of-pocket spending on prescription medications. The “Patient’s Right to Know Drug Prices Act” and the “Know the Lowest Price Act” address a practice known as “gag clauses.”
We are looking for cancer patients who have experienced high or unexpected out-of-pocket costs due to copay accumulator policies.  Read more about these programs and tell us your story today to help us inform policymakers about the impact of these programs on real people.
