Fresh & Local:Broccoli Weather
Do you feel that? Yup, it finally feels like fall. With cooler weather comes the return of cruciferous veggies - also called “cole crops” - like broccoli. The first tender heads of fall broccoli at market have been beautiful this past week. A truly versatile vegetable, and a favorite of kids, broccoli is delicious whether cooked into a stir fry or soup, or simply eaten raw in a salad or with hummus. Steamed or raw are the best ways to preserve broccoli’s nutritional benefits - of which there are many! This veggie is commonly known as a super food because of its rich vitamin makeup and health benefits. Broccoli is a great source of fiber, vitamins A, C and K, antioxidants which fight cancer, calcium, iron and magnesium. Broccoli has been seen at the tables of Poche Family Farm (pictured), Monica’s Okra World, Major Acre Farm, and more! Unfortunately, the hot and wet weather we experienced late summer took a toll on farmer Timmy Perilloux’s broccoli, but the second crop will be here soon enough for those looking for the tasty little trees. Now is the season to get some fresh broccoli into your diet and give yourself a healthy, delicious boost.

Arugula
Amusingly called “rocket” in some parts of the world, arugula is the zesty salad green that grows rapidly, hence its speedy moniker. Its peppery flavor dresses up a boring egg sandwich or takes your sad desk salad lunch to the next level. It somehow seems to stay fresh in the fridge for longer than other salad greens and even mixes up into a decent pesto sauce. Not to mention that it’s chock full of nutrients like calcium, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and so much more. Need any more convincing to pick up a bunch from Poche Family Farm (pictured), Two Dog Farms, or River Queen Greens at the market this week? Check out this list of arugula recipes from Bon Appetit– the options are endless.

Vendor of the Week:Powers Beekeepers
Warm and sweet welcomes to our new Thursday, Mid-City Market beekeepers, Powers Beekeepers! The Powers family tends to bees located across 4 properties on the west bank including Algiers, Belle Chasse, and Sugar Roots Farm in New Aurora. They offer raw unfiltered and unpasteurized honey with and without the comb, pure raw honeycomb, and will soon have pollen for sale! All of Powers Beekeepers’ honey is made naturally in local beehives without harsh treatments “with the goodness left in” and these apiarists believe that bee stings are the key to a long life. The Powers will attend Thursday market every other week - check our social media for updates!

Recipe of the Week:Smoky Eggplant Dip
I made this babaganoush-like recipe from Smitten Kitchen twice last week, that’s how much I love it. It’s filling, healthy, and goes great with sliced cucumbers, peppers, or a hunk of bread. Plus, it’s easy and fun to make-- char your eggplant over your gas stove before roasting it in the oven and tossing it in the blender with a few other simple ingredients. Do yourself a favor and make a double batch. Find your eggplants, cucumbers, peppers, and bread at any of our markets.
