Our Rivertown Farmers Market’s summer break is almost over and we are ready for the first market of the season this Saturday, October 6th! We’re kicking off the market with a great lineup of over a dozen vendors including returning vendors Things ’n Stuff, Varino’s Italian Sausage, and the LA Growers Co-op. We are excited to see new vendors joining us this fall such as Indian Springs Farmers Association Cooperative, Citronola, Essentially NOLA, Hot Plants, Gonsoulin Land and Cattle and more! Country Girls Creamery will attend every other Saturday bringing milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream. Bring the whole family! We will have a children’s Marketeer activity, free yoga (weekly), and music by the one and only Spider Murphy.
Catch us at LaSalle’s Landing in Kenner (where Williams Blvd. meets Rev. Richard Wilson Dr.) every Saturday from 9-1pm starting October 6th.

October is National Farm to School Month
Join us and thousands of schools, early care and education sites, farms, communities and organizations across the country as we celebrate food education, school gardens and lunch trays filled with healthy, local ingredients. Everyone can celebrate the triple win of farm to school where school kids, small farmers and the local economy all benefit! If you’d like to participate in our Meet Me at the Market program, where Market Umbrella staff visit classrooms to share lessons on nutrition, local seasonality and provide samples, and then the class pays a visit to the farmers market for interactive educational activities where students can meet farmers, fishers, ranchers, please contact caryn@marketumbrella.org.

And if you are a farmer, teacher, distributor, student, child nutrition director, school administrator, ag professional or non-profit working in farm to school, or if you are curious about what the whole thing is about, join us at the 2018 Louisiana Farm to School Conference, a two-day event which will take place on October 9th and 10th in Baton Rouge. Tuesday afternoon is a grower/buyer meet up from 4-7pm and Wednesday hosts traditional conference activities with tracks on sourcing, growing and learning for practitioners in any of the three walks of farm to school. Keynote speaker Chef Ann Cooper, the “Renegade Lunch Lady” should not be missed. Hope to see you there!
And if you're a teacher or school administrator interested in connecting your school to our new project, Harvesting for a Healthy Louisiana, contact angelina@marketumbrella.org. We are currently seeking New Orleans public primary school partners who we want to work with to build or refurbish school gardens (and train teachers on maintenance and curriculum), connect to Harvest of the Month programming to do local produce taste tests and cafeteria promotion, and work with school food providers on incorporating local produce into the regular menu.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Star Nursery
Welcome back to the market Star Nursery, a fifth generation family farm from Belle Chasse, LA. The Ranatza’s started a truck farm in New Orleans after immigrating from Italy in the 1920s, but moved to Belle Chasse in the 40s and added citrus and a tree nursery to the repertoire. Come meet or catch up with the fifth generation of this CCFM staple citrus producer at the Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday CBD market and stock up on satsumas - the season’s just begun and it looks to be a great one!

Chef Jason King and his companion Boots are avid market shoppers and prioritize fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients. Enjoy a grilled cheese for breakfast, lunch or both Tuesdays in October at 200 Broadway Street from 9-1pm and check them out at our Backyard BBQ!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:Pumpkin Soup with Lime Leaf and Coconut
This Vietnamese-style twist on a fall favorite from VietWorldKitchen will have you reaching for your soup pot and immersion blender time and time again. Although some of the ingredients may look intimidating, they are easily substituted for more readily available options. Feel free to swap a stalk of fresh lemongrass for the kaffir lime leaves, and ginger works perfectly in place of galangal (learn the difference between the two here). For a meat-free version, leave out the bacon and use vegetable stock. This highly adaptable and hard-to-mess-up soup can be made with butternut squash, pumpkin, or any other winter squash you can get your hands on at the market. Poche Family Farm, Timmy Perilloux, Amorphous Gardens, and more will have you covered for all of your squash needs, check Veggi Co-op and Amorphous for fresh lemongrass, and don’t forget the coconut milk from South of Eden.
