Farm to Pit Backyard BBQ Success! | October 8, 2018

FRESH & LOCAL:

Farm to Pit Backyard BBQ Success!

The first ever Crescent City Farmers Market Backyard BBQ was not your average BBQ, and was a rollicking success! A good time was had by market supporters of all ages this past Sunday. Aaron Burgau of Central City BBQ hosted CCFM’s fundraising party and roasted a whole pig. Delicious seasonal dishes provided by some of the best farm to table restaurants you’ll often see shopping at market abounded. Winter squash featured prominently in Revel’s take on tacos, as well as Saba’s hummus dish. Other dishes which met with high acclaim were Marjie’s Grill’s chicken wings with aji dulce peppers (they look like red habaneros but are citrusy and sweet, not spicy), Squeeze’s assortment of vegetarian sushi, Luvi’s beef dumplings, and food by market vendors. Recent Green Plate Special vendor Bua Thai treated us to some last of the season okra ensconced in classical thai flavors, and Michael Varino of Varino’s Italian Sausage was a huge hit. If you need more of these subtly herbaceous italian sausages from a generations old Italian family recipe, find him at Tuesday and Saturday Rivertown markets!
We could go on and on about the food, but also want to thank the donors that made the silent auction and raffle such a success and so much fun, as well as our beer and spirits donors, Urban South, Second Line Brewing, Old New Orleans Rum and Bolden Vodka as well as Pal’s Lounge and Cure for making those delicious cocktails happen. And of course, Sam Price and the True Believers, who really brought the party, and gave the Disco Amigos something to dance to!
We also unveiled our new T-shirt design contest! Follow this link to enter through our website. We love our “Don’t Miss a Beet” shirts, but are ready to add something new to the shirt lineup. Entries from all ages welcome, and accepted until midnight, November 5th.

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

Rivertown Farmers Market

Thanks to all who joined us to celebrate the first market of the season at Rivertown Farmers Market! We enjoyed a vibrant fall market and are so glad to be back at LaSalle’s Landing with its cool breezes and picturesque views of the Mighty Mississippi. And with a forecast calling for scattered showers all day, we really dodged all of it til the very end of market. We have brought on many new vendors since last season, as the robust crowd of attendees on Saturday can attest, but we’re not done yet. With more vendors scheduled to start market over the course of the season, keep your eyes peeled for exciting new arrivals, like Country Girls Creamery - bringing milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream and pork and pork sausage - who will be attending every other weekend starting this Saturday. Take your Chevy to the levee and make your groceries at the Rivertown Farmers Market in Kenner on Saturdays, 9-1pm.

October is National Farm to School Month

Join us and thousands of schools, early care and education sites, farms, communities and organizations across the country as we celebrate food education, school gardens and lunch trays filled with healthy, local ingredients. Everyone can celebrate the triple win of farm to school where school kids, small farmers and the local economy all benefit! If you’d like to participate in our Meet Me at the Market program, where Market Umbrella staff visit classrooms to share lessons on nutrition, local seasonality and provide samples, and then the class pays a visit to the farmers market for interactive educational activities where students can meet farmers, fishers, ranchers, please contact caryn@marketumbrella.org.
And if you are a farmer, teacher, distributor, student, child nutrition director, school administrator, ag professional or non-profit working in farm to school, or if you are curious about what the whole thing is about, join us at the 2018 Louisiana Farm to School Conference, a two-day event which will take place on October 9th and 10th in Baton Rouge. Tuesday afternoon is a grower/buyer meet up from 4-7pm and Wednesday hosts traditional conference activities with tracks on sourcing, growing and learning for practitioners in any of the three walks of farm to school. Keynote speaker Chef Ann Cooper, the “Renegade Lunch Lady” should not be missed. Hope to see you there!

Pumpkins

Do you use pumpkins for more than just carving? With tons of health benefits and dozens of ways to cook them, you absolutely should. Edible pumpkins are high in vitamin A, fiber, and antioxidants, which will help keep your eyesight sharp, your stomach full, and may reduce the risk of cancer. Plus, the amino acid tryptophan found in pumpkin seeds helps you produce serotonin, which can boost your mood. Read more about the health benefits of eating pumpkin here. Not all pumpkins make for good eating, but you can check out some tasty ones at the market. You can make soups, salads, breads, and of course pie with the queen of fall produce. Buy them from Poche Family Farms at Tuesday and Saturday markets-- you won’t be sorry.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:

Butternut Salad with Farro, Pepitas and Ricotta Salata

Butternut squash salad with farro and pepitas from Smitten Kitchen is a perfect weeknight dinner or wholesome lunch. Tangy quick-pickled red onions and salty pumpkin seeds pack a lot of flavor and mix up the texture, making this dish anything but boring. Buy your pumpkin seeds or try your hand at roasting your own. Pick up your squash from Perilloux Produce, Indian Springs Growers Association, Poche Family Farms, Amorphous Gardens, and more.
