NOMA opens the doors for The Orléans Collection, reuniting European masterworks for the first time since the 1790s
NOMA celebrates the close of New Orleans' Tricentennial year by reuniting European masterworks from the collection of the city's regal namesake, Philippe II, the Duke of Orléans. The Orléans Collection includes paintings by Rembrandt, Veronese, Valentin, and Rubens, among others -- many never before exhibited in the US -- that were formerly displayed in Philippe II's Parisian residence, the Palais-Royal, before being dispersed at auction in the 1790s. Note that entry to The Orléans Collection requires an $8 upcharge in addition to standard admission but admission to the museum and this exhibition is always free for NOMA members and on Wednesdays for Louisiana residents courtesy of the Helis Foundation.
Programming for this exhibition will include lectures by curators and guest scholars along with a French Connection Film Series on select Saturdays in November and December.
Special ticketed events will include:
Wednesday, November 7, 7 pm, featuring a trio of musicians performing works from the 17th and 18th centuries. $15 | $10 for NOMA Members |
Sunday, December 9, 7 pm, will include a private curator-led tour of
The Orléans Collection followed by a champagne reception with pastry selections from New Orleans finest chefs. Susan Pinkard, author of
A Revolution in Taste: The Rise of French Cuisine, 1650-1800, will deliver a lecture during the reception. $90 | $75 NOMA Members | Purchase tickets
For an in-depth study of the exhibition with Curator Vanessa Schmid and Curatorial Fellow Kelsey Brosnan, join Classes with Curators: Looking at Art in 18th-Century Paris, for three consecutive Tuesdays, November 27 - December 11, 6 - 8 pm. For more information and to enroll, visit this weblink.
