Sunday, October 14: FREE roaming opera performance in Besthoff Sculpture Garden in tribute to The Orléans Collection
The New Orleans Opera Society will stage an admission-free performance on Sunday, October 14, from 4 to 6 pm, of selections from Pygmalion and other French Baroque compositions in advance of the opening of NOMA's much-anticipated exhibition The Orléans Collection later this month. Singers will be situated throughout the garden as "living statues," following the premise of the tale of Pygmalion, a Greek myth that forms the basis of Jean Philippe-Rameau's 1748 one-act opera. Read more about "Art Comes to Life - A Roaming Performance through the Besthoff Garden" in this interview with New Orleans Opera Director Robert Lyall.

Join NOMA staff and fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art, artists, art museums, NOMA's collections and exhibitions.
The selection for October is Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling by Ross King. The book chronicles the four years it took Michelangelo to create the vast Biblical mural on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the politics swirling around Rome and the Vatican in the early sixteenth century.
On Tuesday, October 16, from 10 am - 4 pm, the public is invited to view a rare, large-scale book featuring highly detailed photographs of the Sistine Chapel mural in its pre-restoration state.
Book Club members may join in a group discussion about the book on either Tuesday, October 23, from 12 - 1 pm, or Wednesday, October 24 from 1:30 - 3 pm.

NEW EXHIBITIONS OPENING IN OCTOBER
Friday, October 19: The focus exhibition Mildred Thompson: Against the Grain marks the first solo exhibition of experimental woodworks by the African American artist who spent much of her career in self-imposed exile in Europe. Ear to the Ground: Earth and Element in Contemporary Art features works by eighteen artists that address themes of nature not just as a resource to be protected or exploited, but as a generative force with its own sentient power. Friday Nights at NOMA will include a roundtable discussion about women in NOMA's history led by NOMA Director Susan Taylor with Walda Besthoff, Bethany Bultman, and Phyllis Taylor. The New Orleans-based Balkan band Blato Zlato will perform in the Great Hall.
Friday, October 26: NOMA celebrates the close of New Orleans' Tricentennial year by reuniting European masterworks from the collection of the city's regal namesake, Philippe II, the Duke of Orléans. The Orléans Collection includes paintings by Rembrandt, Veronese, Valentin, and Rubens, among others -- many never before exhibited in the US -- that formerly hung in the Palais-Royal of Philippe II, the Duke of Orléans, in Paris before being dispersed at auction in the 1790s.
