Weekly Update from the Crescent City Farmers Market

FRESH & LOCAL:

Hand in Hand

Crescent City Farmers Markets are all producer only markets, and for the most part, food only markets - the exception is our new Rivertown Market. Before we began managing it, Rivertown accepted arts and crafts and personal and home care product vendors. We wanted to work with what was already working at that market, but stay within our mission of supporting local agriculture. Thus, the rules allowing certain non-food products at market to a limited extent were born. At Rivertown only, we allow up to 10% of total table space at market to be taken up with arts, crafts, personal and home care products, so long as ingredients for those products were sourced in a way that supports local agriculture (in the way goat’s milk soap or beeswax candles could), or are food related so products used for food production, food prep or food storage or just food themed. This is why you’ll find quilted microwave cozies for bowls, quilted casserole carriers and oven mitts at Things ‘n Stuff’s table, along with a wide assortment of jams, jellies and pickles. And also how Essentially NOLA, a soap and personal care vendor came on board - because fresh local foods and handmade bath products made from those foods go hand in hand!
We met Christine Ross of Essentially NOLA as a shopper at market when she was sourcing honey and herbs for her soaps and other bath products. And since coming on board as a regular vendor, she’s begun sourcing tallow from grassfed beef vendor Gonsoulin Land and Cattle, even further integrating locally sourced ingredients into her products. If this piques your interest about soap making, check out this article for more info on the process of soap making, and the difference between commercially manufactured and handmade soaps for an insight into a household product you may never have given much consideration. Feel free to let us know what you thinkabout this new rule for that market. We know it’s a change, but based on foot traffic at the Essentially NOLA tent at Rivertown on Saturdays, it’s been a welcome one.

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

Sunchokes

Whether you call them Jerusalem artichokes, sunroots, sunchokes (our preference), or earth apples, these tasty tubers have been spotted at the market by way of Amorphous Gardens on Tuesdays. Sunchokes look a bit like ginger and taste a bit like a potato, albeit a sweet and nutty potato, and are delicious eaten raw or lightly cooked in salads, baked, sautéed, or pureed in soups. To those looking for the nutritional facts, sunchokes harness a good source of iron, potassium and thiamin, and are low in calories and high in fiber. Pick some up on your next market run!

Market Match at Robért Fresh Market Ends October 31st

Robért Fresh Market has been an invaluable partner over the course of 2018 in our Market Match program. Market Match is a Market Umbrella program that increases SNAP shoppers’ purchasing power to bring more fresh fruit and vegetables into their households. Robért helped SNAP shoppers have access to more healthy food by incentivizing fruit and vegetable purchases made with EBT cards at all of their New Orleans and Baton Rouge stores this year. Together, with funding support from a FINI grant, we were able to issue over $17,000 in healthy food incentives to Robért shoppers in 2018. We’re sad to announce that Market Match will no longer be offered at Robért Fresh Market after Wednesday, October 31st. Coupons will still have a 30-day expiration date from the day of purchase for anyone who has participated in the program. SNAP shoppers can still double their SNAP dollars at all Crescent City Farmers Market locations.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

A&K Citrus

You know it’s full on citrus season when all of our citrus vendors have started their market season! Last week we welcomed the infamous A&K Citrus from Braithwaite, Louisiana - the heart of Plaquemines Parish back to market for their fall season. As the name may give away, Aloma & Kenneth (the A & K) Savastano are Louisiana citrus growers and long time vendors at the CCFM. The Savastanos grow an array of navel oranges, blood oranges, tangelos, kumquats, grapefruits, mandarins, satsumas, and more. In addition to citrus, A&K grows mustards, broccoli, pecans, and mirlitons, just to name a few items from their specialty crop selection. Say hello to them at the Tuesday and Saturday markets for now, and Thursdays in the near future.

TUESDAY’S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:

Frencheeze Food Truck

Say cheese! Frencheeze Food Truck is slinging the cheese as the Green Plate Special for one last Tuesday and they’re sure to put a smile on your face. Chef Jason King and his companion Boots are avid market shoppers and prioritize fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients. Enjoy a grilled cheese for breakfast, lunch or both Tuesdays in October at 200 Broadway Street from 9-1pm!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:

Ginger Miso Soba Soup

It’s truly soup season now and this ginger miso soba soup from Fork Knife Swoon is just about as cozy and wholesome as it gets. Stop by Veggi Farmers Co-op at the market on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday to get your tofu-- they have plain as well as lemongrass chili and mushroom vermicelli. You can also pick up your kale, scallions, and various microgreens while you’re at it and don’t forget fresh and tender baby ginger from Poche’s Family Farm.
