FRESH & LOCAL:

Holiday Prep

Holiday season is upon us and mirlitons are here! This pear shaped squash generally turns up in fall, and if we have a mild winter, you might see some in springtime as well. Often served pickled or shrimp stuffed (see the recipe of the week for our favorite rendition of the latter) this vegetable also graces many a New Orleans thanksgiving table as a dressing. A native of Mexico and South and Central America, the mirliton was adopted into creole cooking in the 1700s when the city was a Spanish colony, but its popularity persisted even as the French took back over, resulting in the name change from the Spanish “chayote” to the French “mirliton”. A harkening back to the rich history of the city, mirlitons have been and remain a hearty and versatile vegetable option, and have penetrated into Vietnamese cuisine. Pick them up at our Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday markets at the tables of Veggi Co-Op and A&K Citrus.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

Williams Produce Farm

We are excited to welcome to the Saturday CBD market Lester Williams of Williams Produce Farm. Joining us from Pte. Coupee, Williams Produce Farm, also a member of the Pte. Coupee Minority Growers’ Co-Op, has finally made it to market. While they’ve been selling fresh squash, shell beans, sweet potatoes, greens, melons and more to restaurant buyers like the Link Group, and their local schools, institutions and food banks, this marks their first farmers market stand in a long time. Stop by to find interesting varieties of produce, like yellow zucchini, buttercup and jester squash, several varieties of heirloom cucumbers, and tendergreens, a spinach-like mild mustard. Later in the spring and summer you’ll find heirloom beans like the Tiger’s Eye, along with an assortment of watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew melon varieties.

TUESDAY’S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:

Carrollton Market

If you’ve shopped at the Crescent City Farmers Market, you know Chef Jason Goodenough. You know, the guy New Orleans Magazine named Chef of the Year 2017? Yup - Green Plate Special fans, we’re all in for a treat this month. Our favorite Riverbend restaurant, Carrollton Market, will be joining us as our Green Plate Special for the month of November! Chef Goodenough’s commitment to local sourcing brings him to the frontlines of the New Orleans food scene each week at the farmers market and Carrollton Market is a phenomenal show of talent, finesse, and appreciation for the food grown by our very own CCFM farmers. We are happy to see him back at the GPS tent and looking forward to what he, and guest chef the Thali Llama, have in store for us!
