Fresh & Local:
When Life Doesn’t Give You Lemons…
While this season’s harvest of citrus is abundant in satsumas, navels, and grapefruit, you might be wondering - where are the lemons? How do I add acidity to my pico? How will I live without my rosemary lemon infused water? What if I wanted to make a dried lemon garland to hang above the fireplace I never actually use for the holidays? Lemons will be few and far between this year at the market, folks. This is due to the hard, days-long freeze we endured January 2018 - remember, the one that killed all the bananas, palms and other shrubbery in town? Lemon and lime trees are the citrus most susceptible to cold weather and many vendors, including all three CCFM citrus growers, experienced tree loss at the hands of the cold. While they have replanted, the new trees will not be harvestable for some time and trees that survived are not producing much. You can find limited offerings at the tables of Star Nursery and L’Hoste Citrus, so squeeze the day! Get these delicacies while you can because they won’t be around for long!

Connect the Crescent
Over these last 3 months, New Orleans residents have had the chance to experience something new getting around town: an integrated transportation network demonstration called Connect The Crescent.
|
|
Sadly, the protected bikeways we've grown accustomed to riding, including the Baronne bikeway near our Saturday CBD market, will only be up for a couple more weeks. So while the pop-up network is still up, go for a ride or a walk, and then show your support for safe, accessible transportation options for every New Orleans resident by taking the survey below.

Vendor of the Week:
Timmy Perilloux
Beloved giant vegetable farmer from Montz, Louisiana Timmy Perilloux has been with the market for over 15 years. You may have noticed that he missed his usual November return to the Saturday CBD, Thursday Mid-City, and Tuesday Uptown markets. Due to unusually high amounts and frequency of rains since August, his crops are “gone pecan” as Timmy would say. For now, you can catch him at the French Quarter Market on Wednesdays, and he expects to be back at Tuesday and Thursday markets in full swing by April.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:
Gabrielle Restaurant
Our good friends Greg and Mary Sonnier of Gabrielle Restaurant will join us under the GPS tent the remainder of the month to complete a year of local chefs committed to cooking with local ingredients at the Uptown Market. Originally located on Esplanade Avenue, Gabrielle Restaurant re-opened its doors on Orleans Avenue in September 2017 after a twelve year Hurricane Katrina hiatus. Award winning Chef Greg Sonnier serves his take on Cajun food with New Orleans flair and on the menu this week is broccoli and cheddar cheese soup, roasted red pepper chili with cornbread, Muffaletta pasta salad, and more. Come out for some heartwarming dishes to keep you cozy in this chilly weather!

Recipe of the Week:
Cauliflower Rice
By now you’ve almost certainly heard of cauliflower rice, the low carb rice substitute that people are raving about. But did you know that it’s super easy to make? Grab a cheese grater or food processor, grate away, saute for a few minutes and season it how you’d like. It goes great with curry, beans, or under a stir-fry. Grab a head or two from Monica’s Okra World or Star Nursery.
What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter!
