West African Cinema Series concludes with Liberian documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell
In conjunction with Lina Iris Viktor: A Haven. A Hell. A Dream Deferred, NOMA is screening four movies by emerging and veteran African filmmakers. The West African Cinema Series will conclude on Saturday, December 15, at 2 pm with the 2008 documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell, a film that follows a coalition of Muslim and Christian women who work for peace in the Liberian civil war. NOMA Book Club announces 2019 reading list and discussion dates
Eleven books, ranging from biographies of Leonardo Da Vinci and William de Kooning to the chronicle of a mysterious photo of bluesman Robert Johnson and the history of the chair, will fill the discussion of NOMA's Book Club throughout the year ahead. PhotoNOLA kicks off with keynote address at NOMA
In conjunction with the citywide PhotoNOLA festival, NOMA will play host to a keynote address by renowned photographer Keith Carter on Thursday, December 13 at 7 pm. Carter's photographs are in numerous collections, including the Getty Museum, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Performance artist Cristina Molina will offer a "whispering tour" of the exhibition Ear to the Ground: Earth and Element in Contemporary Art on December 12. She takes on the persona of the earth and views the gallery as a subterranean realm. |

Join us for Small Talks, Noontime Talks, and daily tours
Small Talks are 10- to 15-minute discussions focused on a single object or small range of objects within the permanent collection or special exhibitions. This week's topics will include select works from Teaching Beyond Doctrine: Painting and Calligraphy by Zen Masters and the "wood paintings" in the exhibition Mildred Thompson: Against the Grain. Noontime Talks are casual conversations frequently scheduled throughout the year at noon between artists, curators, and other special guests with NOMA visitors. Curatorial Fellow Allison Young will discuss the works on view in Lina Iris Viktor: A Haven. A Hell. A Dream Deferred on Wednesday, December 12.
Performance artist Cristina Molina will offer a special "whispering tour"of Ear to the Ground on Wednesday, December 12, from noon to 3 pm. Molina envisions the exhibition as a subterranean realm and offers visitors an insightful and entertaining interpretation of the works on view.
Docent-guided tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions are offered daily at 1 pm. The final docent-led tour of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden in 2018 will be Saturday December 15 at noon. Sculpture Garden tours will resume in the spring of 2019.

Mindfulness Classes return in January 2019
Back by popular demand, a series of eight Mindfulness Classes will offered on Saturday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am from January 19 through March 16. Dr. Jayashee Rao will lead sessions that allow participants to live in the moment with curiosity, without judgement, and with a willingness to be with what is. The registration fee for the entire series is $70 nonmembers | $50 NOMA members. Sign up now.

Baby ArtsPlay! engages youngest NOMA visitors
Instill a love of art at an early age through a guided, interactive experience with Baby ArtsPlay! Young Audiences Wolf Trap teaching artists will present a series of six workshops on Saturday mornings for children ages 0-3 and their caregivers. Parents, grandparents, guardians and their young ones are welcome to join the the second of six sessions of Baby ArtsPlay! on Saturday, December 15, at 10:30 am, which will focus on "Baby Balancing Act" (bilateral integration). StoryQuest bonds families around reading and art
Families bond around the act of reading children's literature at StoryQuest. A professional storyteller will read a book about holidays on Saturday, December 15, at 11 am. Ideal for children ages 2-7, no registration is required and the activity is free with museum admission.

Studio KIDS! engages students in hands-on art workshops
This fall Studio KIDS! presents "Express Yourself" workshops for children ages 5-10 who want to get creative and learn art-making techniques on select Saturday mornings from 10 am to noon. On December 15, kids will model and sculpt a clay bowl. Register in advance | $25 NOMA members, $30 nonmembers.

Wellness Classes Among the Artworks
NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.
Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, December 15, 8 - 9 am
Tai Chi/Chi Kung in the Galleries: Monday, December 17, 6 - 7 pm

In the weeks ahead at NOMA
Wendesday, December 19, 12 pm: Curatorial Fellow Kelsey Brosnan will lead visitors through The Orléans Collection during a Noontime Talk. These talks are limited to the first 25 visitors who sign up at the admission desk.
HOLIDAY HOURS | Monday, December 24, 10 am to 5 pm: The Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open to visitors on Christmas Eve but the museum will be closed. Both are closed on Christmas Day. The museum and sculpture garden are open during special holiday hours on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day from 11 am to 5 pm.
