Tulane Maya Symposium examines ancient Mesoamerican empire
The sixteenth-annual Tulane Maya Symposium, open to the public as part of Friday Nights at NOMA on February 15, will feature a keynote address by Jeremy A. Sobloff of the Santa Fe Institute titled "Is 'Collapse' A Useful Term in Understanding Pre-Columbian Maya History?" Sobloff will address the environmental and economic conditions that led to the abandonment of the Central Maya Lowlands of the Yucatán in the eighth and ninth centuries CE.

Enroll now in 'On Collecting' workshop with curators, a how-to session on creating a private photography collection
The first of a new series of curator-led workshops, "On Collecting" will allow participants to draw upon specialist knowledge and practical expertise in building a private collection. On Tuesday, February 19, from 6 - 8 pm, Curator Russell Lord and Curatorial Fellow Brian Piper will discuss collecting photography, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Past Present Future: Building Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The fee for this one-time session is $75 for NOMA members | $100 for nonmembers. Enroll now.

Celebrate "Galentine's Day" at NOMA on February 13
Galentine's Day is a day for celebrating the magic and power of female friendships! On Wednesday, February 13, Galentines visiting NOMA can enjoy two glasses of wine for the price of one at Café NOMA. Admission is free on Wednesdays to all Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation.

Members-only resale for Summer Art Camp enrollment continues through Sunday, February 17
Through Sunday, February 17, NOMA members are eligible for early enrollment in full-day Summer Art Camps, which will run in eight weeklong sessions from June 3 to August 2 (excluding the week of July 4). Nonmembers may enroll beginning Monday, February 18.

New Orleans and Haitian spirituality and cultural connections will be theme of panel discussion
In conjunction with the exhibition of Vodou flags in Bondye: Above and Beyond, the cultural-exchange association HaitiaNOLA will lead a panel discussion on Wednesday, February 20, at 5 pm about shared spiritual practices between Haiti and New Orleans that are rooted in West Africa. The event will open with drumming by a group of Haitian musician and conclude with drumming by a New Orleanian. Preceding the panel discussion, co-curator Nic Aziz will lead a small talk about the exhibition at 4:30 pm.

Join a talk or tour
Noontime Talks are casual conversations scheduled at noon between artists, curators, and other special guests with NOMA visitors. Curator Russell Lord will discuss selections from Past Present Future: Building Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Wednesday, February 20.
Docent-guided tours are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Saturdays and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify.

NOMA Book Club to discuss biography of prominent art collectors Dominique and John de Menil
Join fellow book lovers for monthly discussions about fiction and nonfiction books related to art, artists, art museums, NOMA's collections and exhibitions.
The NOMA Book Club's selection for February is Double Vision: The Unerring Eye of Art World Avatars Dominique and John de Menil by William Middleton. This Franco-American couple became one of greatest cultural forces of the twentieth century through the creation of groundbreaking exhibitions of art, investment in art scholarship, and the founding of innovative, world-renowned galleries and museums in their chosen home of Houston, Texas.

NOMA is for kids!
Studio KIDS! returns with a range of activities that allow children ages 5 to 10 to get creative in an art making class. Each session features different media under the instruction of skilled teaching artists. Studio KIDS! will be held on the following Saturday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am:

NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

In the weeks ahead
Friday Nights at NOMA will not be scheduled for February 22 or March 1 and 8 as the peak of Carnival season gets underway.
Friday, March 15: A new exhibition, Keith Sonnier: Until Today, opens. This retrospective of the Louisiana-born conceptual artist features many sculptural works made of neon.
