Floral displays, lectures, and other special events will fill NOMA's galleries from March 28-31

SAVE THE DATE! Art in Bloom returns to NOMA with elaborate floral displays, a day of lectures and a luncheon, kicking off on Wednesday, March 27, with a patron preview. Guest speakers on that date will include renowned floral designers from Putnam & Putnam of New York, and British interior designer Nicky Haslam.  Purchase tickets or sponsorships now for these lectures and other special events. The 2019 theme is "Illuminations: Looking Within and Beyond," in partnership with IBERIABANK, and floral displays will remain on view through Sunday, March 31. 
Enroll now in 'On Collecting' workshop with curators, a how-to session on creating a private photography collection 
 
The first of a new series of curator-led workshops, "On Collecting" will allow participants to draw upon specialist knowledge and practical expertise in building a private collection. On Tuesday, March 19, from 6 - 8 pm, Curator Russell Lord and Curatorial Fellow Brian Piper will discuss collecting photography, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Past Present Future: Building Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The fee for this one-time session is $75 for NOMA members | $100 for nonmembers. Enroll now.
Summer Art Camps open for enrollment 

Enrollment in full-day Summer Art Camps, which will run in eight weeklong sessions from June 3 to August 2 (excluding the week of July 4), is now open to both NOMA members ($300 per week) and nonmembers ($400 per week). Choose from visual or performing art camps for age groups 5-7 and 8-10. 
Join a talk or tour 

Small Talks are 10- to 15-minute discussions focused on a single object or small range of objects within the permanent collection or special exhibitions. View the full list of talks and tours for the week ahead.
 
Noontime Talks are casual conversations scheduled at noon between artists, curators, and other special guests with NOMA visitors. Join Curator Ndubuisi Ezeluomba for a discussion titled "For Spirits and Kings: Prestigious Arts of Africa" on Wednesday, March 13
 
Docent-guided tours are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Saturdays and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify. 
NOMA Book Club to discuss life and work of Louisiana-born artist Keith Sonnier

Join fellow book lovers for monthly discussions about fiction and nonfiction books related to art, artists, art museums, NOMA's collections and exhibitions. 
 
The NOMA Book Club's selection for March is Keith Sonnier: Until Today by Jeffrey Grove and Terrie Sultan, the catalog that accompanies an exhibition of works by the Louisiana-born conceptual artist opening at NOMA on March 15.  
 
A curatorial program will be held for book club members on Friday, March 15, from 12 - 1 pm. Group discussion about the book will be held in the Felix J. Dreyfous Library on NOMA's ground floor on Tuesday, March 26, from 12 - 1 pm. Contact NOMA Librarian Sheila Cork for more information and to reserve space for Book Club sessions at scork@noma.org or 504.658.4117.
NOMA is for kids! 

Studio KIDS! returns with a range of activities that allow children ages 5 to 10 to get creative in an art making class. Each session features different media under the instruction of skilled teaching artists. Studio KIDS! will be held on the following Saturday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am:
  • March 9 - Pastel Drawing: Vibrant Blooms
  • March 16 - Acrylic Painting: Color Me Happy
  • April 6 - Personal Pendant
Advance registration required: $25 per class NOMA members | $30 nonmembers. Enrollment is now available online
Wellness Classes among the artworks 

NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, March 9, 8 - 9 am

Tai Chi/Chi Kung: No session for Monday, March 11, 6 - 7 pm

Classes are $5; FREE for NOMA members and East Jefferson Wellness Center members. To register, call East Jefferson Healthfinder at 504.456.5000.

In the weeks ahead

There will be no Friday Nights at NOMA for March 8. 

Friday, March 15: A new exhibition, Keith Sonnier: Until Today, opens. This survey of the Louisiana-born conceptual artist features many sculptural works made of neon. NOMA curators will lead a series of Small Talks during Friday Nights at NOMA on Sonnier and his artist peers who formed the noted "Five from Louisiana" in the 1970s. Bamboula 2000 will perform in the Great Hall.

Friday, March 22: Friday Nights at NOMA will host a community discussion about expansive forms of cultural exchange and more potentially adverse forms of cultural appropriation. Performance artist Cristina Molina will also lead visitors through the exhibition Ear to the Ground: Earth and Element in Contemporary Art
