This Week at the Crescent City Farmer's Market
Jazz it up! | April 29, 2019

Fresh & Local:Jazz it up!
Want to get more involved in the markets and our food access programming? Spring is a great time to volunteer at markets - the weather is (often) beautiful, the crops are plenty, and markets are busy and cheerful places to be. Come hang out and talk about your favorite seasonal recipes while you work alongside staff to set up and break down market and beverage service, as well as engage with customers and vendors. See the inside workings of our various fresh food access programs, and while you’re here, pick up all the fresh fruits and veggies (and seafood, meat, dairy, bread, etc.) you need. Check back often as we also use this calendar to post volunteer opportunities at various events we attend around town and host ourselves.
Check out our calendar of available volunteer opportunities and sign up for a spot directly through the calendar. See you at market!

Eat Fit at Jazzfest
Keeping up with your healthy diet can be a challenge during festival season. That’s why our friends at Eat Fit have partnered with your favorite Jazz Fest pop-ups for some hidden menu dishes. You won’t find these specific dishes and combinations on menu boards, but you can let vendors know that you want dishes “Eat Fit” style. You’ll get nutritious, delicious food and drinks that are lower in sodium and animal fats without white carbs and added sugar. Check out the menu here and download the app to view full nutritional facts of each dish on the Eat Fit Hidden Menu.

Fire up the Future
This year, the Made in New Orleans Foundation will be sending two aspiring chefs to New York, bringing them one step closer to achieving their professional goals in the culinary and hospitality industries.
The scholarship includes tuition to the International Culinary Center, housing, materials, a life changing internship at one of New York's most established restaurants, and on-going support from New Orleans.
Help us in spreading the word and nominating someone from New Orleans with a passion for the culinary industry.
Requirements and application are available on the MiNO website. Deadline: May 31, 2019.

Vendor of the Week:Hot Plants
With gardening season upon us, now is the time to get acquainted with Hot Plants if you aren’t already. You can find them at our Wednesday Bywater, Thursday Mid-City, and Friday Bucktown markets with dozens of edible, herbal, and medicinal plant starts. Their plants are “grown with spartan love so that they may survive the slings and arrows of the Southeast with relative ease once they are let into the world.” In addition to selling at CCFM, Hot Plants operates a small nursery in the Upper Ninth Ward that is open most Sundays from 12-5pm. Come get some plants and plenty of excellent gardening advice from them soon so that your garden can survive the slings and arrows of a New Orleans summer!

Managing Survivorship One Foot and Breath in Front of Another
Being a caregiver and survivor takes adjusting to the diagnosis of the "C" word. Until there is a cure for cancer, may we all do our best to put one breath and foot in front of another.

Putting one foot in front of the other along with each breath has been my goal not only since I received my diagnosis of cancer, but also with recent news of two family members who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
I have at my own pace moved beyond feelings of shock, anger and sadness to begin to embrace the “warrior and cheerleader stage”, as I call it. As a new caregiver, I describe the warrior or cheerleader stage to be when you are fully ready and committed to fight and offer support in a healthy manner while not sacrificing your own needs and health at the same time. With the good support of others, I am actively coping. What seems to help is the story or testimony of others on a similar journey.
