BROADMOOR BEAT - APRIL 15th

Broadmoor News

Help Fight Food Insecurity

Support EATmoor! May 7th

In Broadmoor we ask, “How’s your 5?” A gentle reminder of the five crucial domains of wellness: sleep, play, eat, work and love. As we gear up for EATmoor! on May 7th, we ask, “How’s your Eat?”  EATmoor! is music, food and fun, but more importantly, it raises awareness around food insecurity in our city. Food insecurity is a lack of access to sufficient, affordable and nutritious food. In New Orleans, 23% of residents experience food insecurity, which is about 11% higher than the national average. 1 in 4 families rely on SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) to supplement their food supply, and many of our families live far from grocery stores where they can find nutritious ingredients.

Good News! Broadmoor puts your parcel fees to work by getting healthy food where it is needed most!
Did you know?
  • The BIA partners with the Broadmoor Community Church to operate the Broadmoor Food Pantry - accessible to families every month. We thank Second Harvest along with our generous donors, for helping us provide fresh and healthy food to our residents and many others across the city.
  • The BIA also offers support to apply for SNAP benefits on Fridays at the Rosa Keller Community Center from 10am-12pm with master’s level social work interns
  • Top Box Foods has a distribution site at the Broadmoor Community Church to deliver healthy fresh food to our neighborhood
  • The BIA partners with Market Umbrella to host “How do you Cook Dat?”, our monthly cooking class where we use recipes featuring ingredients central to our food pantry.

How's Your 5?
Broadmoor Health and Wellness Center wants you to remember to check-in with yourself and those you care about.   "How's your 5?" raises awareness around self-care and encourages more meaningful conversations about the overall mental and physical health of the people we engage with everyday in our community.
If you really want to know how someone is doing, ask “How’s Your 5?” It’s a way of creating a common language across five fundamental domains of human experience:
Work. Love. Play. Sleep. Eat.
As part of its observance of National Minority Health Month (April), the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) launched the Active & Healthy Challenge to encourage individuals, especially racial and ethnic minorities, to work physical activity into their daily and weekly schedules. This Challenge is nationwide and open to everyone that wants to start a new healthy active lifestyle!
