Bodies of Knowledge exhibition opens Friday, June 28
Arrive at 5 pm to watch original dance performance
NOMA's summerlong exhibition, Bodies of Knowledge, will incorporate photography, dance, music, film, books, and numerous date-specific, artist-led gallery activations as a means of conveying how language, in its many forms, both archives and asserts global cultural identities. For the June 28 opening, Friday Nights at NOMA will feature a commissioned dance performance with artistic director Edward Spots and choreographer Donna Crump in collaboration with youth dancers from Dancing Grounds, along with gallery talks among three of the exhibition's artists, and the first in a series of musical collaborations.
Schedule
- 5 pm | Black Magic dance performance (Visitors should assemble at the front steps of the museum. After the first act, visitors will follow dancers into the Great Hall for the remainder of the performance)
- 5:30 - 8:30 pm | Art on the Spot drop-in activity table
- 5:30 - 8:30 pm | Safar music series with Mahmoud Chouki and Amigos de Samba
- 6 - 7 pm | Gallery talks with artists Adrianna Corral (6 pm), Manon Bellet (6:30 pm), and Garrett Bradley (7 pm)

The Constant Gardener kicks off Artist's Choice Film Series
In conjunction with Bodies of Knowledge, NOMA has invited a few of the represented artists to share a film that has informed their practice in an Artist's Choice Film Series. On Saturday, June 29, at 2 pm Adriana Corral will introduce The Constant Gardener, a 2005 movie starring Ralph Fiennes as a British diplomat in Kenya who seeks to unravel the unsolved murder of his social activist wife. Sign up now for remaining Summer Art Camps
Summer Art Camps are now underway, and a few spaces remain in the weeks come. Check availability and enroll now in the remaining four weeklong sessions through August 2 (excluding the week of July 4). The fee is $300 per week for NOMA members | $400 per week for nonmembers. Choose from visual or performing art camps for age groups 5-7 and 8-10.

Baby Artsplay returns with new interactive Saturday morning workshops for newborns/infants and 3-4-year-olds
Instill a love of art at a young age through a guided, hands-on gallery experience. With support from The Helis Foundation, teaching artists from Young Audiences Wolf Trap will provide a free six-part workshop series on Saturday mornings designed to instruct caregivers on how to use the arts at home to promote early learning. Workshop 5 begins Saturday, June 15, for children ages 0-3 from 10:30 to 11 am, followed by a workshop for 3-4-year-olds from 11 to 11:30 am. Join a talk or tour
Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify.
Photography Curator Russell Lord will discuss the contemporary tintype portraits of American roots musicians on view in Timothy Duffy: Blue Muse on Wednesday, June 26, at 12 pm.
Curator Mel Buchanan will discuss NOMA's decorative arts collection on Wednesday, July 3, at 3 pm.

Free admission for military families through Labor Day
The New Orleans Museum of Art is pleased to once again participate in BlueStar Museums, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, BlueStar Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America.
Each summer since 2010, Blue Star Museums have offered free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day (Monday, September 2). More than 2,000 museums across America are participating in Blue Star Museums.

Wellness Classes among the artworks
NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.
Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, June 29, 8 - 9 am
Tai Chi/Chi Kung: Monday, July 1, 6 - 7 pm

In the weeks ahead
Thursday, July 4: NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open Independence Day from noon to 5 pm.
Friday, July 12, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA takes on a Gallic theme with French Fête, featuring music by Susanne Ortner's Ambiance Française and a cooking demonstration by Café NOMA's culinary curator Chris Montero, along with other French-related programming for visitors of all ages.
