Fresh & Local:Au Revoir Rivertown
All good things must come to an end. The Rivertown Farmers Market will be closing down for its annual Summer Break - the calendar months of August and September. Don’t fret though! You can still find your favorite vendors at our year round, rain or shine markets. Craving that green onion sausage? Catch Varino’s Italian Sausage at our Uptown and Bucktown markets. As always, you can find Monica’s Okra World at the Uptown, Mid City, Bucktown, and CBD markets. In “knead” of some turtle bread? Fleur Dough Lis can be found at Bucktown along with Violet Sprinkles and her colorful macaron creations. Indian Springs Farmers Association can be found at our Uptown, Mid-City, CBD markets and you can find Mr. Byron, the President of Indian Springs Farmers Association at Bucktown. Find Ollie’s Tamales at Bucktown. The last market of the season will be Saturday, July 27 and will return the first Saturday of October, when produce is plentiful again!

Picks of the Week:Stop and Smell the Flowers
“When I went vegan, I was very limited to what I could eat, and I missed a lot of traditional Latin food, especially Ecuadorian food because my family is Ecuadorian. I just started doing it myself. I started experimenting and doing it myself. I took it into my own hands and decided to share it. It shows the community how traditions can be the same, but they can evolve. I’ve had to deal with criticism. Since it’s so hardwired into the culture that food has to be a certain way, they think you’re trying to change that tradition, but the purpose of the whole thing to preserve that essence and just switch it up a little… Hearing ‘It’s just like my grandmother’s’ or ‘It’s just like how my family made this’ is the ultimate compliment.”

Christmas in July
Summer in New Orleans can get tiresome, and sightings of winter squash, jams and figs around the market have us dreaming of cooler days and Christmas treats. While we can’t change the weather, we can still spread some holiday cheer! Most of us typically associate butternut squash with the comfort foods of autumn and winter, but its growing season is actually happening now. It’s called winter squash because the thick rind allows for long term storage, so before the modern developments in global “conventional” agricultural trade, when you ate pretty much only what you grew and storing food for colder seasons was important, you could put up the butternut and acorn squash (and others) growing now to save and eat them later. Grab a butternut squash from Indian Springs or Timmy Perilloux and check out our recipe of the week for some dinner inspo. And for dessert? Try a thumbprint cookie just like grandma used to make with peach jam or Figgy Pudding made from fresh market figs. If you blast your AC you’ll *almost* feel like its winter vacation.

You Are One in a Mirliton!
That’s why we need you! Want to get more involved in the markets and our food access programming? Summer is a great time to volunteer at markets - the weather is beautiful, the crops are plenty, and markets are busy and cheerful places to be. Come hang out and talk about your favorite seasonal recipes while you work alongside staff to set up and break down market and beverage service, as well as engage with customers and vendors. See the inside workings of our various fresh food access programs, and while you’re here, pick up all the fresh fruits and veggies (and seafood, meat, dairy, bread, etc.) you need. Check back often as we also use this calendar to post volunteer opportunities at various events we attend around town and host ourselves.

Vendor of the Week:Fleur Dough Lis
Fleur Dough Lis is owned, operated and baked by Johnny Crosby. Johnny started baking back in 1999 and learned the trade through Foodie’s Kitchen while mentoring the head baker. He took a break from the bread world for five years, but in 2010 it called him back and he’s been baking ever since. Johnny joined the Crescent City Farmers Market family earlier this year, and comes to market with breads baked fresh that morning. His offerings include a variety of creative flavors including challah, jalapeño cheddar, rosemary garlic scallion, loaded baked potato (including loaves with and without bacon) and our personal favorite - turtle bread, an irresistible treat with swirls of chocolate and caramel. Whatever loaf you try, you’re in for something special. Find Johnny and his fresh bread at our Bywater and Ochsner markets now, and at the Bucktown market when those two go on their summer break.
