As the summer heat intensifies and the crops become less plentiful, we must say farewell to a couple of markets for a brief summer break. We just can’t have a “farmers market” without the farmers, you know? This Wednesday, July 31st will be the last Ochsner and Bywater Markets of the season. National Farmers Market Week
Don’t let the heat get you down, for next week is National Farmers Market Week. Let’s celebrate our local farmers and food producers with a bang! On Tuesday, August 6th at the Uptown Market we will feature a strawberry preserves demo featuring vendor Fletcher Farms and Chef Celeste Gill in partnership with the LDAF Strawberry Marketing Board. Cool off on Thursday, August 8th at the Mid City market with a watermelon tasting from Indian Springs Farmers Association. Pick a perfect peach at the Friday, August 9th Bucktown Market. We will show you how to slice your peaches and make a yummy salad - easy, peachy. Finally, join us Saturday, August 10th at the CBD Market for a fun, Louisiana summer veggie-inspired kids activity. We will have music all week and fun give-aways at the welcome tent :)

Stop and Smell the Flowers
“The recipes are family traditions, most of it. Of course, I play a lot. I started cooking at fourteen years old because in Turkey it’s kind of tradition that they teach the girls how to cook. I moved from Turkey in 2001. I came as a tourist to New York to visit my friends and have a good time. I went to visit a friend in New Orleans, and liked it and stayed a little longer. My visa was almost over, but I didn’t want to go back because I like this country. I went out to dance and met my husband actually. At Tipitina’s. I was standing in front of the bar, and he came and asked if I’d like to dance, and so we danced a bit. And after that, he said he would take me to my car. He told me, ‘Oh don’t park your car over here, it’s kind of dangerous. I could drive you next time if you give me your phone number.’ And I gave it, and he called me for maybe four or five months. We became good friends. I had to go back to Turkey because my visa stopped. He said, ‘I don’t want you to go back. Let’s get married. I love you.’ And I love him, too. We’ve been married for sixteen years now.”

Hurricane Safety with Rutabaga the Bearded Dragon
August is coming up, and with it, the peak of hurricane season. While we keep our fingers crossed that the worst of the storms miss us, it's still important to have a plan and be ready. Create a supplies kit including flashlights, water and food to last for up to 3 days. Additionally, have a plan in case of evacuation for you and your furry (or not so furry) friends.
What does hurricane season mean for market? While we are open rain or shine, safety is our top priority. Some vendors travel an hour or more to our markets, so even if the weather is fine here, it may not be the case at their home or farm. Furthermore, rain events can impact a farmer's ability to grow and pick produce, and a fisher’s ability to catch. If the weather is looking notably bad, check our social media which we keep up to date, or give us a call for changes in market schedule. However, we’re not afraid of a little (or a lot of!) rain so expect to find markets up and running whenever possible. Have a safe hurricane season y’all!

You’re One in a Mirliton!
That’s why we need you! Want to get more involved in the markets and our food access programming? Summer is a great time to volunteer at markets - it’s hot but markets are busy and cheerful places to be. Come hang out and talk about your favorite seasonal recipes while you work alongside staff to set up and break down market and beverage service, as well as engage with customers and vendors. See the inside workings of our various fresh food access programs, and while you’re here, pick up all the fresh fruits and veggies (and seafood, meat, dairy, bread, etc.) you need.
Check out our calendar of available volunteer opportunities and sign up for a spot directly through the calendar. Check back often as we also use this calendar to post volunteer opportunities at various events we attend around town and host ourselves. We have extra shifts posted for National Farmers Market Week! Vendor of the Week:
Josey’s Goods
Josey’s Goods is run by husband and wife duo Gene and Lisa Josey. Based out of Lafayette, Josey’s offers a variety of jams, jellies, pickles and preserves from locally grown produce. Lisa and Gene started Josey’s Goods in August of 2017. Inspired by Lisa’s cajun upbringing, Josey’s Goods allows Lisa and Gene to share their love of cajun culture through their company. They aim to teach the importance of supporting local farmers while demonstrating the high quality of food they provide. The highest compliment a shopper can give to Lisa and Gene is “just like my momma or grandma used to make”. You can find they Josey’s at our Bucktown Market every Friday - be sure to say hello!

Ay, Dios Mío! Our friends at Casa Borrega will be serving your favorite authentic Mexican foods for one last Tuesday in July. Stop by the Green Plate Special tent at the Uptown market from 9am to 1pm for your fill of tacos, tostadas, tortas and more! Deliciosa!

Orecchiette with Corn, Zucchini, Jalapeño, Feta, and Basil
This pasta dish from Spoon and Ink is perfect for the summertime. The fresh veggies and herbs are the star of this dinner, making it a great way to showcase what’s in season at market. Feel free to get creative with other market finds such as tomatoes or mushrooms.
