Watch Manon Bellet's ephemeral installation disintegrate by way of body motion and music at gallery activation

On Wednesday, July 24, at 3 pm musicians from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) will activate Brève braises, an installation by artist Manon Bellet in the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge consisting of a wall covered in the charred remains of burned paper that gradually fall from musical vibrations and body movement. FREE admission to Friday Nights at NOMA featuring improv concert and cooking demonstration

Admission will be free from 5 - 9 pm for Friday Nights at NOMA on July 26, featuring Moroccan-born musician Mahmoud Chouki in collaboration with jazz pianist Oscar Rossignoli for a Safar improvisational concert that blends Eastern and Western music. Café NOMA will also continue its Artful Palate cooking series with Kate Schwarzlose, sous chef at Brennan's, who will prepare lemon ricotta agnolotti. 

The evening will also feature two free screenings of Solange Knowles' new film When I Get HomeThe screenings are sold out. Seating is limited in Stern Auditorium. Attendees who have RSVPed should check in to receive a wristband and be seated no less than 10 minutes prior to the screenings. Please be seated by 6:20 for the 6:30 pm screening, and 7:35 for the 7:45 pm screening. Unclaimed seats will be given to those in a standby line that will form in the Dutch gallery at the entrance to the auditorium.

Voting is now open for the 2019 "Best of New Orleans" poll in the alt-weekly newspaper Gambit. Type in New Orleans Museum of Art under the Best Museum category in the Local Life section at this link. The poll is open through July 31. 
August is Museum Month with free entry to partnering museums for NOMA members

August is New Orleans Museum Month, a collaboration among cultural institutions of all sizes across the metro area. NOMA members have the opportunity to visit all partnering museums FREE OF CHARGE for the entire month. A NOMA membership permits free entry for two persons to any participating museum with no limits to the number of visits. Join NOMA now or call (504) 658-4130 or visit the front desk.

Videos by Iranian-exile artist Shirin Neshat screened every Wednesday

Three videos by Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat will be screened on continuous loop from 10 am to 1 pm every Wednesday through October 9 (excluding July 31) in Stern Auditorium as part of the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. Titled Turbulent, Rapture, and Fervor, the short films capture the dichotomies of modern life in Iran and implications of the 1979 Islamic revolution upon women. Sign up now for final Summer Art Camp

Summer Art Camps are now underway, and a few spaces remain in the weeks come. Check availability and enroll now in the remaining weeklong session from July 29 to August 2, under the theme "Inspired by Africa" for ages 8 to 10.

The fee is $300 per week for NOMA members | $400 per week for nonmembers.
Attend a talk, tour, or workshop

Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify.

Curatorial Fellow Allison Young will lead visitors through the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge on Wednesday, July 24 at 12 pm.

Photographer Abdul Aziz will discuss themes found in You Are Here: A Brief History of Photography and Place on Wednesday, July 24, at 3:30 pm.

NOMA partners with the Antenna Gallery and ricRack Inc. for a sewing workshop on Saturday, July 27, from 12 to 4 pm to create costumes for a reenactment of the 1811 slave uprising along River Road from November 9 - 10. An RSVP is requested.  
Curator Mel Buchanan will discuss NOMA's decorative arts collection on Wednesday, July 31, at 12 pm.
Free admission for military families through Labor Day

The New Orleans Museum of Art is pleased to once again participate in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America. 

Each summer since 2010, Blue Star Museums have offered free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day (Monday, September 2). More than 2,000 museums across America are participating in Blue Star Museums
Baby Artsplay session rescheduled after Hurricane Barry

Instill a love of art at a young age through a guided, hands-on gallery experience. With support from The Helis Foundation, teaching artists from Young Audiences Wolf Trap provide a free workshops on select Saturday mornings designed to instruct caregivers on how to use the arts at home to promote early learning. Due to Hurricane Barry, Workshop 6 of the summer series has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 27. Caregivers and children ages 0-3 will gather from 10:30 to 11 am, followed by a workshop for 3-4-year-olds from 11 to 11:30 am. Register for Baby Artsplay at Eventbrite or call 504.658.4128 for additional information. The six-week series will return in October.
Wellness Classes among the artworks 

NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, July 27, 8 - 9 am

Tai Chi/Chi Kung: Monday, July 29, 6 - 7 pm

Looking for Oum Kulthum (2017) follows an Iranian woman filmmaker living in exile who seeks to document the life of a famous female singer of the Arab world. As a movie within a movie, both women find themselves confronting struggles and sacrifices in a conservative, male-dominated culture. 
In the weeks ahead

Throughout the month of August, when temperatures reach 95 degrees or higher, the next day's admission to NOMA will be free for Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation's fourth-annual Art & AC program. Stay up to date by following NOMA's Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Friday, August 2, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA will include a screening of films created by New Orleans regional high school students in collaboration with NOVAC and filmmaker Garrett Bradley, inspired by  Bodies of Knowledge. Musician Joy Clark will perform in the Great Hall. Shirin Neshat's feature-length movie Looking for Oum Kulthum will be shown in Stern Auditorium at 6:30 pm.

Friday, August 9, 5 - 9 pm: During Friday Nights at NOMA photographer Jonathan Traviesa will discuss his work and themes in the exhibition You Are Here: A Brief History of Photography and Place, which closes August 11.

From August 1 through 31, when the temperature is confirmed at 95 degrees or higher on FOX8 News, admission to NOMA will be free the following day for Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
