From August 1 through 31, when the temperature is confirmed at 95 degrees or higher by meteorologist David Bernard on FOX8 News, admission to NOMA will be free the following day for Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation.

Throughout the month of August, when temperatures reach 95 degrees or higher, the next day's admission to NOMA will be free for Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation's fourth annual Art & AC program. Wednesday, August 7, marks the first effective day after verification from the weather report on FOX 8 News. Look for special giveaways of sunglasses, hand fans, and bottled water throughout the day. Stay informed in the weeks ahead by following NOMA's Instagram and Facebook accounts. 
Celebrate French art, cuisine, music, and film during Friday Nights at NOMA on August 9 

Rescheduled after a weather cancellation in mid-July, French Fête returns on Friday, August 9, from 5 - 9 pm with programs for visitors of all ages.

6 pm | Artful Palate cooking demo with Chef Kris Padalino preparing a browned butter and peach tart in Café NOMA

7:15 pm | Screening of Haute Cuisine (French with subtitles | 2012 | Rated PG-13 | 1 hour, 35 minutes). Watch the trailer below about this comedy/drama based on the true story of a woman hired as the private chef of French President François Mitterand.

August is Museum Month with free entry to partnering museums for NOMA members

August is New Orleans Museum Month, a collaboration among cultural institutions of all sizes across the metro area. NOMA members have the opportunity to visit all partnering museums FREE OF CHARGE for the entire month. A NOMA membership permits free entry for two persons to any participating museum with no limits to the number of visits. Join NOMA now or call (504) 658-4130 or visit the front desk.

Videos by Iranian-exile artist Shirin Neshat screened every Wednesday

Three videos by Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat will be screened on continuous loop from 10 am to 1 pm every Wednesday through October 9 (excluding July 31) in Stern Auditorium as part of the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. Titled Turbulent, Rapture, and Fervor, the short films capture the dichotomies of modern life in Iran and implications of the 1979 Islamic revolution upon women. Gee's Bend quilts on display in decorative arts gallery

Born of resourcefulness and enlivened by free-spirited patterning, quilts made by African American women in the remote community of Gee's Bend, Alabama, are internationally recognized as masterpieces of textile art. Five of these quilts, recently acquired by NOMA through the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, will be on display in the Elise M. Besthoff Charitable Foundation Gallery beginning Friday, August 9, through Sunday, March 30, 2020. 
Attend a talk, tour, gallery activation or concert

Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify.

Curatorial Fellow Brian Piper will discuss highlighted photographs on view in  on Wednesday, August 7 at 3 pm. The exhibition closes on Sunday, August 11.

Photographer Jonathan Traviesa will speak about his works and themes in You Are Here during Friday Nights at NOMA on August 9 at 6:30 pm

On Wednesday, August 14, a number of activities surrounding the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge are scheduled: 
12 pm | Curator Katie Pfohl will deliver a Gallery Talk.
1 pm | A Gallery Activation of Wafaa Bilal's installation 168:01 encourages NOMA visitors to take a blank book in exchange for a published book, for sale in the NOMA Shop, that will be shipped to a university in Baghdad, Iraq, at the close of the exhibition. Read an interview with the artist for more information. 
3 - 4 pm | Musician Mahmoud Chouki will perform with cellist, composer, and singer Helen Gillet as part of an ongoing   that blends Eastern and Western traditions. 
Free admission for military families through Labor Day

The New Orleans Museum of Art is pleased to once again participate in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America. 

Each summer since 2010, Blue Star Museums have offered free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day (Monday, September 2). More than 2,000 museums across America are participating in Blue Star Museums
Wellness Classes among the artworks 

NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, August 10, 8 to 9 am

Tai Chi/Chi Kung: Monday, August 12, 6 to 7 pm

In the weeks ahead

Friday, August 16, 5 to 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA will include a screening at 6:30 pm of Shirin Neshat's feature-length film Women Without Men, set in Tehran in 1953 during the American-backed coup that restored the Shah of Iran to power.

Saturday, August 17, 3 pm: The French science-fiction film La Jetée (1962) will be introduced by artist Manon Bellet, her pick for an ongoing Artist's Choice Film Series.

Saturday, August 24, 10 am to 3 pm: Join us for an indoor "Play It Cool" Family Festival with free admission and programs for visitors of all ages throughout NOMA's galleries.

Tickets and sponsorships are now on sale for LOVE in the Garden, NOMA's annual outdoor party in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Friday, September 27, from 6:30 to midnight. Guests will enjoy food from more than 60 of New Orleans' finest restaurants and craft cocktails from competitive bartenders, along with music and dancing beneath the moss-draped oaks.
