Friday Nights at NOMA features film about women in the 1953 Iranian coup, cooking demo, and live music
Filmmmaker Shirin Neshat is among the eleven international artists represented in the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge. Her feature film Women Without Men, a story about four women in Tehran caught up in the 1953 American-backed coup that restored the Shah of Iran to power, will be screened during Friday Nights at NOMA on August 16. Café NOMA, all exhibitions and galleries, and the Museum Shop will be open until 9 pm. Arrive early and stay late for the full lineup of programs:
- 5 - 8 pm | Art on the Spot drop-in activity table
- 5:30 - 8:30 pm | Music by Lucho (a fusion of Andean and electronic music)
- 6 pm | Artful Palate cooking demonstration in Café NOMA featuring Chef Chris Vazquez preparing beef goulash

The films of Iranian exile filmmaker Shirin Neshat explore gender issues in the Islamic world. Two recurrent images in Women Without Men are a long dirt road extending to the horizon and a river that suggests a deep current of feminine resilience.

Throughout the month of August, when temperatures reach 95 degrees or higher, the next day's admission to NOMA will be free for Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation's fourth annual Art & AC program. Wednesday, August 14, qualifies as yet another free day after verification from the weather report on FOX 8 News. Look for special giveaways of sunglasses, hand fans, and water bottles. Stay informed in the weeks ahead by following NOMA's Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Artist's Choice Film Series presents sci-fi movie La Jetée
In conjunction with Bodies of Knowledge, represented artists from the exhibition will introduce films that have informed their artistic practice. Artist Manon Bellet has chosen La Jetée, an experimental French Left Bank science-fiction film from 1962 that tells a story of time travel in a post-nuclear war world. August is Museum Month with free entry to partnering museums for NOMA members
August is New Orleans Museum Month, a collaboration among cultural institutions of all sizes across the metro area. NOMA members have the opportunity to visit all partnering museums FREE OF CHARGE for the entire month. Videos by Iranian-exile artist Shirin Neshat screened every Wednesday
Three videos by Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat will be screened on continuous loop from 10 am to 1 pm every Wednesday through October 9 (excluding July 31) in Stern Auditorium as part of the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. Titled Turbulent, Rapture, and Fervor, the short films capture the dichotomies of modern life in Iran and implications of the 1979 Islamic revolution upon women. Buy tickets or sponsorships for LOVE in the Garden
Tickets and sponsorships are now on sale for LOVE in the Garden, NOMA's annual outdoor party in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Friday, September 27, from 6:30 to midnight. Guests will enjoy food from more than 60 of New Orleans' finest restaurants and craft cocktails from competitive bartenders, along with music and dancing beneath the moss-draped oaks.

Attend a talk, tour, gallery activation, or concert
Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify.
On Wednesday, August 14, a number of activities surrounding the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge are scheduled:
- 1 pm | A Gallery Activation of Wafaa Bilal's installation 168:01 encourages NOMA visitors to take a blank book in exchange for a published book, for sale in the NOMA Shop, that will be shipped to a university in Baghdad, Iraq, at the close of the exhibition. - 3 - 4 pm | Musician Mahmoud Chouki will perform with cellist, composer, and singer Helen Gillet as part of an ongoing Safar music series that blends Eastern and Western traditions.

Free admission for military families through Labor Day
The New Orleans Museum of Art is pleased to once again participate in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America.
Each summer since 2010, Blue Star Museums have offered free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day (Monday, September 2). More than 2,000 museums across America are participating in Blue Star Museums.

NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

In the weeks ahead
Friday, August 23, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA will include another Safar musical concert with Mahmoud Chouki in performance with Cyrille Aimee and Ricardo Pascal. Chef Jonah Nissenbaum will prepare shrimp and corn bisque as the Artful Palate summer cooking series concludes.
Saturday, August 24, 10 am to 3 pm: Join us for an indoor "Play It Cool" Family Festival with free admission and programs for visitors of all ages throughout NOMA's galleries.
Monday, September 2: NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open for special Labor Day holiday hours from noon to 5 pm.
