Cancer Nutrition Myth of the Week:
This week we'll address the myth that superfoods reduce cancer risk.
The Myth: Superfoods cure cancer.
The Truth: A healthy diet helps reduce risk of recurrence, not just one food item.
There is no such thing as a "superfood", but you can eat a "superdiet"! It's true that what we eat and drink and how physically active we are can help us reduce risk of recurrence, but it isn't ONE food or ONE exercise that is going to be the magic bullet. It's the combination of foods and beverages we have regularly, as well as physical activity and making choices to minimize exposure to carcinogens, like cigarette smoke and UV rays.
What is a superdiet? A diet is not something you go on and off of. A diet is simply what you eat! We all have diets and what we choose to eat is what makes our diet. Eating a superdiet means making it a habit to choose foods and beverages that are particularly nutritious. A plant-based diet is a superdiet!
A plant-based diet includes foods and drinks that have a lot of phytochemicals (plant nutrients like antioxidants), vitamins, minerals, and fiber, along with some combination of the major nutrients (water, carbs, protein, or fat). Learn more about plant-based diet recommendations for cancer survivors in my webinar.
What foods are "superdiet" foods? Here is a list of great foods to include as part of a healthy diet! Remember, it's not one food, but eating a variety of healthy foods that helps reduce risk of recurrence! |
