Opera Nouvelle brings 'Carmen' to Friday Nights at NOMA
In advance of its full-scale production, the New Orleans Opera will present selections from Georges Bizet's Carmen in the Great Hall during Friday Nights at NOMA on September 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The ever-popular Art on the Spot drop-in activity table will be set up from 5 to 8 p.m.
All galleries, Café NOMA, and the Museum Shop remain open until 9 p.m.

Studio KIDS! fall workshops open for enrollment
This fall Studio KIDS! presents eight workshops for children ages 5 to 10 who want to get creative and learn art-making techniques inspired by works at NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The classes are held Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm; cost per class: $25 members | $30 nonmembers. For the first class, scheduled for Saturday, September 7, participants will create a "quilted" square in mixed media, in conjunction with the exhibition The Quilts of Gee's Bend. The NOLA Project presents William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure
Debuting on Tuesday, September 10, at 7:30 pm for a twelve-night run on select dates through September 29, The NOLA Project returns to NOMA's Great Hall for a new twist on the Shakespearean classic Measure for Measure. This timeless play pits moral purity against corruption in a story that suits our modern American age of divisive politics and legal retribution. NOMA members receive an admission discount. For this world-premiere production, The NOLA Project partnered with PlayOn Shakespeare to present Aditi Kapil's modern-verse translation of the classic.

Buy tickets or sponsorships for LOVE in the Garden
Tickets and sponsorships are now on sale for LOVE in the Garden, NOMA's annual outdoor fundraiser in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Friday, September 27, from 6:30 to midnight. Guests will enjoy food from more than 60 of New Orleans' finest restaurants and craft cocktails from competitive bartenders, along with music and dancing beneath the moss-draped oaks.

Videos by Iranian-exile artist Shirin Neshat screened every Wednesday through October 9
Three videos by Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat will be screened on continuous loop from 10 am to 1 pm every Wednesday through October 9 (excluding July 31) in Stern Auditorium as part of the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. Titled Turbulent, Rapture, and Fervor, the short films capture the dichotomies of modern life in Iran and implications of the 1979 Islamic revolution upon women. Attend a talk, tour, or gallery activation
Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify.
Wednesday, September 4, 12 pm: African Art Curator Ndubuisi Ezeluomba will discuss Ancestors in Stone.
Two events associated with the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge will be held on Wednesday, September 11:
- 1 to 3 p.m. A Gallery Activation of Wafaa Bilal's installation 168:01 encourages NOMA visitors to take a blank book in exchange for a published book, for sale in the NOMA Shop, that will be shipped to a university in Baghdad, Iraq, at the close of the exhibition. - 3 to 4 p.m. Musician Mahmoud Chouki joins New Orleans-based surrealist folk singer/songwriter and harpist Jesse Autumn as part of an ongoing

Wellness Classes among the artworks
NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.
Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, September 7, 8 to 9 a.m.
Tai Chi/Chi Kung: Monday, September 9, 6 to 7 p.m.

The exhibition Tina Freeman: Lamentations, which pairs photographs of the Louisiana wetlands with glacial landscapes in the Arctic and Antarctic, is accompanied by a catalog that will be available in the Museum Shop.

In the weeks ahead
Friday, September 13, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA will feature Mahmoud Chouki in another Safar concert, joined by guitarists Georgie Petrov and Sam Dickie.
Friday, September 20, 5 - 9 pm: In conjunction with the opening of the photography exhibition Tina Freeman: Lamentations, the photographer will be joined by two environmental experts for a discussion at 6 pm followed by a book signing of the catalog in the Museum Shop. Featured speakers include David Muth, director of the Gulf Restoration Program at the National Wildlife Federation, and Brent Goehring, assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Tulane University.
