Mahmoud Chouki's Safar music series headlines Friday Nights at NOMA
Friday Nights at NOMA on September 13 will feature another in a series of East-West Safar music collaborations led by New Orleans-based Moroccan musician Mahmoud Chouki, in concert with Georgie Petrov and Sam Dickie. Arrive early and stay late for the full lineup of events:
- 5 - 8 pm: Art on the Spot drop-in activity table
- 5:30 - 8:30 pm: Safar concert
- 6 pm: Gallery Talk with Curator Katie Pfohl on Bodies of Knowledge
- 7 pm: Gallery Talk with Curator Mel Buchanan on The Quilts of Gee's Bend
- 7:30 pm: Screening of the short film While I Still Can (featuring Gee's Bend quilters)
All galleries and exhibitions, Café NOMA, and the Museum Shop will remain open until 9 pm.

Artists Choice film series presents Whatever Lola Wants
In conjunction with Bodies of Knowledge, artists represented in the exhibition have been invited to select a film for screening as a Saturday matinee at NOMA. Join artist Mahmoud Chouki on Saturday, September 14, at 2 pm as he introduces Whatever Lola Wants (2007 | Not rated | 1 hour, 55 minutes). The film follows Lola, an American postal worker who travels to Egypt to seek out a legendary belly dancer. Lola dreams of becoming a belly dancer herself. Watch the trailer below:

Attend a tour, talk, gallery activation, or concert
Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm.
Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call (504) 658-4153 to verify.
Wednesday, September 11, 12 pm: Curator Lisa Rotondo-McCord-McCord will discuss Inspired by Nature: Japanese Art from the Permanent Collection.Two events associated with the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge will be also be held on Wednesday, September 11:
- 1 to 3 pm A Gallery Activation of Wafaa Bilal's installation168:01 encourages NOMA visitors to take a blank book in exchange for a published book, for sale in the NOMA Shop, that will be shipped to a university in Baghdad, Iraq, at the close of the exhibition. Writer, curator, and visual artist Kristina Kay Robinson will discuss the connectivity between Iraq and New Orleans and also read from an original piece of nonfiction about Iraq and events of 9-11. - 3 to 4 pm Musician Mahmoud Chouki joins New Orleans-based surrealist folk singer/songwriter and harpist Jesse Autumn as part of an ongoing
Numerous events will take place on Wednesday, September 18:
- 12 pm: Photography Curator Russell Lord will discuss the new exhibition Tina Freeman: Lamentations, a series of paired photographs depicting Louisiana's wetlands and the glacial landscapes of the Arctic and Antarctic.
- 3 pm: Manon Bellet's installation Brève braises will be activated by musician Justin Peake. Read more in an interview with Bellet.
- 3:30 pm: Curatorial Assistant Anne Roberts will lead visitors through the new exhibition An Ideal Unity: The Bauhaus & Beyond.
- 6 pm: The Helis Foundation Artist Talks at NOMA will feature artist Adriana Corral in conversation with Héctor Domínguez Ruvacalba, associate professor at the University of Texas Austin. The NOLA Project presents William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure
The NOLA Project returns to NOMA's Great Hall for a new twist on the Shakespearean classic Measure for Measure. Eleven performances remain through September 29. NOMA members receive an admission discount. Purchase advance tickets at nolaproject.com. Café NOMA will serve drinks and light refreshments through intermission.

Teens may volunteer for days of service in Besthoff Sculpture Garden
Four Saturdays this fall are set aside for Teen Days of Service in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, from 8:30 to 11:30 am: September 14, October 12, November 9, and December 7. No chaperones are required. Interested volunteers should contact Pamela Buckman at pbuckman@noma.org; (504) 658-5010.

Studio KIDS! fall workshops open for enrollment
This fall Studio KIDS! presents eight workshops for children ages 5 to 10 who want to get creative and learn art-making techniques inspired by works at NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The classes are held Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; cost per class: $25 members | $30 nonmembers. In the next class, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, participants will recycle pages from a book for a base for ink drawings of wrought-iron designs that explore line and shape. Buy tickets or sponsorships for LOVE in the Garden
Tickets and sponsorships are now on sale for LOVE in the Garden, NOMA's annual outdoor fundraiser in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Friday, September 27, from 6:30 to midnight. Guests will enjoy food from more than 60 of New Orleans' finest restaurants and craft cocktails from competitive bartenders, along with music and dancing beneath the moss-draped oaks.

Wellness Classes among the artworks
NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Videos by Iranian-exile artist Shirin Neshat screened every Wednesday through October 9
Three videos by Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat will be screened on continuous loop from 10 am to 1 pm every Wednesday through October 9 in Stern Auditorium as part of the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. Titled Turbulent, Rapture, and Fervor, the short films capture the dichotomies of modern life in Iran and implications of the 1979 Islamic revolution upon women. In the weeks ahead
Friday, September 20, 5 - 9 pm: In conjunction with the opening of the photography exhibition Tina Freeman: Lamentations, the photographer will be joined by two environmental experts for a discussion at 6 pm followed by a book signing of the catalog in the Museum Shop. Featured speakers include David Muth, director of the Gulf Restoration Program at the National Wildlife Federation, and Brent Goehring, assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Tulane University.
Friday, October 4, 5 - 9 pm: Artist Wilmer Wilson will discuss his film Black Mask, on view in the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge, at 6:30 pm as part of Friday Nights at NOMA.
Saturday, October 5, 2 pm: The Artist's Choice Film Series concludes with a screening of the 1980 hit movie Fame, introduced by Edward Spots.
