October 4: Artist Wilmer Wilson to speak during Friday Nights at NOMA as Bodies of Knowledge enters final weeks
Wilmer Wilson, among the eleven artists represented in the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge, will discuss his video installation Black Mask, along with a series of travelogue books created from his Running Tour performances, during Friday Nights at NOMA on October 4. Arrive early and stay late for the full lineup of events:
- 5 - 8 pm | Art on the Spot drop-in activity table
- 5:30 pm | Gallery Talk with Curator Katie Pfohl of Bodies of Knowledge
- 6:30 pm | Artist lecture with Wilmer Wilson
- 7:30 pm | Activation of Brève braises with artist Menon Bellet and musician Justin Peake (Read more in an interview with the artist)
All galleries and exhibitions, Café NOMA, and the Museum Shop remain open until 9 pm.

Attend a tour, talk, or gallery activation
Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm.
Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call (504) 658-4153 to verify.
Two exhibition-related events will be held on Wednesday, October 2:
- 12 pm | Curator Mel Buchanan will discuss The Quilts of Gee's Bend.
- 1 pm | Writer Kristina Kay Robinson will join curators for a reading and activation of Wafaa Bilal's installation 168:01. The installation, pictured above, allows visitors to take a blank white book in exchange for a printed book, available for sale in the NOMA Shop, that will be shipped to Baghdad, Iraq, at the close of the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge. Artists Choice Film series concludes with the blockbuster 1980 movie Fame
In conjunction with Bodies of Knowledge, represented artists were asked to select a movie that has inspired their practice. The final selection, the original movie
(1980 | Rated R | 2 hours, 14 minutes), chosen by performance artist Edward Spots, will screen on Saturday, October 5, at 2 pm. Fame tells the story of aspiring students facing trials and triumphs as they work their way through New York's High School of Performing Arts. Watch the trailer:

Safar concert series concludes with group concert on Sunday, October 13
New Orleans-based Moroccan musician Mahmoud Chouki will perform with bassist and luthier Martin Masakowski for a Safar concert blending Eastern and Western music traditions on Wednesday, October 9, at 3 pm (free with museum admission).
As a grand finale, Chouki has invited nine musicians to collaborate in a closing concert for Bodies of Knowledge on Sunday, October 13, at 6 pm. Tickets are $15 NOMA Members | $20 Nonmembers. Advance tickets may be purchased online or at the door.

Two opportunities remain to see videos by Iranian-exile artist Shirin Neshat, Wednesdays October 2 and 9
Three videos by Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat will be screened on continuous loop from 10 am to 1 pm every Wednesday through October 9 in Stern Auditorium as part of the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. Titled Turbulent, Rapture, and Fervor, the short films capture the dichotomies of modern life in Iran and implications of the 1979 Islamic revolution upon women. Studio KIDS! fall workshops open for enrollment
This fall Studio KIDS! presents eight workshops for children ages 5 to 10 who want to get creative and learn art-making techniques inspired by works at NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The classes are held Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; cost per class: $25 members | $30 nonmembers. In the next class, scheduled for Saturday, October 5, participants will create a grayscale collage using found words and images in black, white, and shades of gray. View the full schedule and enroll now; space remains for all sessions but each is limited to 14 seats.

Wellness Classes among the artworks
NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.
Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, October 5, 8 to 9 am
Tai Chi/Chi Kung: Monday, October 7, 6 to 7 pm

The Kaminari Taiko drummers will perform at three times at the museum's entrance during Japan Fest on Saturday, October 12.

In the weeks ahead
Saturday, October 12, 10 am - 5 pm: Japan Fest returns to NOMA with drumming demonstrations, food booths, vendors, anime cosplayers, and children's activities.
Select evenings, October 16 through November 10, 7 pm: The NOLA Project presents an updated twist on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for twelve productions in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Read more and purchase advance tickets.
Friday, October 18, 6 pm: Join members of Lee Ledbetter & Associates during Friday Nights at NOMA for a discussion and signing of the design and architecture firm's debut book. The firm consulted with NOMA in construction of the pavilion in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden.
Thursday, October 24, 6 pm: Artist Fred Wilson, best known for his role in refiguring the representation of race in museums, will join New Orleans-based artist Ron Bechet in conversation for the annual Donna Perret Rosen Lecture. The talk is free with museum admission and limited to 180 seats in Stern Auditorium.
