Who you Callin’ a Turkey? | November 18, 2019

Fresh & Local:

Who you Callin’ a Turkey?

Every year for Thanksgiving, we gather to feast on the bounty that the Earth has provided for us. Among our favorites to make with said local bounty are sweet potatoes (with or without marshmallow topping - not local), brussels sprouts, green bean casserole, stuffed mirlitons, smothered greens, pies galore and so much more. Lest we forget the piece de resistance - the turkey. Whether you roast it, brine it, smoke it, put it in a bag, stuff it, or fry it, the turkey is sure to be the centerpiece of your table.
This year, Crescent City Farmers Market is excited to announce that we have a brand new poultry vendor at the Saturday CBD market - Greener Pastures, who have had a limited run of TURKEYS for sale. They pasture-raised 80 birds this year, which have been available on a first come, first served basis - so hurry before they get gobbled up. If all goes well, they’ll have more next year.
First time tackling a turkey or want to switch up your recipe this year? Bon Appétit test kitchen has been running a very informational (and hilariously funny) Thanksgiving series for all of your holiday staples, starting with the perfect turkey and cranberry sauce, so gobble ‘til you wobble folks!

Picks of the Week:

FPAC Members Advocate for Local Food

The Food Policy Advisory Committee, or FPAC, is a broad-based coalition of individuals, organizations and businesses, working together to create systemic change in the New Orleans food system through policy and Market Umbrella is a founding member. As of 2017 FPAC is officially an advisory body to city council, providing insight and guidance and raising policy considerations.
On November 7th, city council passed a couple of great resolutions in support of local food - hurrah! The first, a resolution supporting urban agriculture that the food production working group of FPAC has been working on and advocating for for years, creates a more permissive landscape for urban growers to produce and sell what they grow. Another resolution encourages local institutions - like hospitals, universities and the like - to purchase locally grown food. These are all great steps toward a vibrant, local food system! Check out the FPAC website to find out more details on both of these resolutions, and more on the work and members of FPAC.

I only have pies for you!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the Crescent City Farmers Market has got your pie covered. Blue Ribbon Pies will be at the Uptown Market tomorrow, Tuesday 11/19 and Tuesday 11/26 for pie ordering and pickup. You can also call Mrs. Chauvin at (985) 345-7515 to pre-order your pie. As always, Mrs. Chauvin will have all of her regular flavors as well as her seasonal mincemeat and apple cranberry pies.

YOU can feed Market Umbrella’s future!

While our farmers are busy planting the seeds for the beets, cabbage, carrots, celery, lettuce, and spinach that we all love, now is the best time for you to make a donation and plant your seeds of support for Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market. Your generous donation will help fund operations in 2020, from the seven weekly Crescent City Farmers Markets to the implementation of educational and assistance programs to ensure access to healthy, local food for our most vulnerable community members and much more! Make a gift and grow with us!

Vendor of the Week:

A&K Citrus

Aloma and Kenneth, the A and the K behind A&K Citrus, have been providing the community with juicy fruit for 50 impressive years. The pair first ventured into the citrus business in the 1970’s, and have been selling goods at Crescent City Farmers Market since before Katrina. The small mom and pop farm is located in Braithwaite, LA, and yields a bounty of seasonal fruit such as satsumas, navel oranges, grapefruits, kumquats, mandarins, and more. Squeeze the day and swing by the market on Tuesdays and Saturdays to pick up your bag of seasonal, citrusy goodness - and a butternut squash or bag of pecans while you’re at it!

Ginger Turmeric Honey Bomb

Has this temperature roller coaster got you feeling a little under the weather? Boom!! We’ve got what you need right here at the market. A ginger and turmeric honey bomb! With their powers combined, this heavy hitting elixir can be added to hot water or tea. Packed with cell protecting antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial qualities this combo is sure to help knock-out what ails ya. Stop by Poche’s tent for freeze-dried ginger and turmeric and grab a jar of honey from Burg’s or Powers’ and prevent that cold or flu from getting you!
