The museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open on Monday, January 20, from 11 am - 5 pm on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Helis Foundation Artist Talk series features Teresita Fernández

Artist Teresita Fernandez whose wall mosaic titled Viñales (Mayombe Mississippi) is among the works in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, will discuss the influences that shape her art during The Helis Foundation Artist Talk series on Wednesday, January 15, at 6 pm. Admission is free for all Louisiana residents on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
Friday Nights at NOMA: Nathaniel Rich discusses climate change research in his book Losing Earth

Friday Nights at NOMA features Nathaniel Rich, author of the acclaimed book Losing Earth: A Recent History. (Read an interview with the author.) conjunction with Tina Freeman: Lamentations and other exhibitions addressing environmental concerns, he will discuss his research on climate change at 6:30 pm on Friday, January 17. Rockabilly vocalist Shawn Williams will perform with her band in the Great Hall and the Art on the Spot activity table welcomes all visitors 
Fragmented Landscapes film series addresses relationship of people to their environments

Throughout the run of Inventing Acadia: Painting and Place in Louisiana, a series of short films collectively titled Fragmented Landscapes by the arts collective Deltaworkers will be screened on select Saturdays. The series continues on Saturday, January 18, at 2 pm with films presented under the theme The Louisiana Landscape.

Final days to see Inventing Acadia: Painting and Place in Louisiana

Don't miss the opportunity to see the first exhibition devoted to 19th-century Louisiana landscape painting in more than forty years. Inventing Acadia: Painting and Place in Louisiana will close on Sunday, January 26.
When completed, the newly renovated auditorium complex will allow for a versatile performance and event space.
Renovation underway to build multifunctional auditorium

Construction has begun to transform NOMA's existing auditorium into a flexible and contemporary space ideal for hosting a wider range of events and programs, from theater-in-the-round to banquets, along with movies, lectures, music, dance, and other performances. Once completed, the auditorium will be flat-floored with surround sound and theatrical lighting, with room for 360 visitors (a capacity increase of 140). In the interim, select NOMA programs will be held in a space adjacent to the ground-floor main exhibition galleries.

Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm.  

Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call (504) 658-4153 to verify.

Studio KIDS! workshops in 2020 open for enrollment
 
From January through  Studio KIDS! presents eight workshops for children ages 5 to 10 who want to get creative and learn art-making techniques inspired by works at NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The classes are held Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm; cost per class: $25 members | $30 nonmembers. The first workshop of the new year starts January 25 (water-based paints). View the full schedule for Spring 2020 at the link below and enroll now; space remains for all sessions but each is limited to 14 seats. 
Les Cenelles is a contemporary string ensemble exploring the Creole diaspora through melody and memory.
In the weeks ahead
 
Friday, January 24, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA will include a conversation between artist Torkwase Dyson and art scholar Allison Young at 7:45 pm upon the opening of Torkwase Dyson: Black Compositional Thought | 15 Paintings for the Plantationocene. Programming will also include an Artist Perspective talk with Hannah Chalew, and a Gallery Talk followed by a book signing by the artists collective Southerly Gold. 

Sunday, January 26, 6 pm: As the exhibition Inventing Acadia: Painting and Place in Louisiana comes to a close, the string band Les Cenelles will present a concert of traditional Creole music and new compositions in the Great Hall. General admission $20 | NOMA members $15. Purchase advance tickets.

Friday, January 31, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA takes on a Scottish theme with poetry, music, food and drink for a Robert Burns Night, presented in collaboration with the NOLA Project theater company.

Tai Chi/Chi Kung, Mondays, 6 --    7 pm

The NOMA Book Club reading selections for 2020 have been chosen.
