Inventing Acadia: Painting and Place in Louisiana and Passage conclude with concerts and gallery talks
Don't miss the opportunity to see the first exhibition devoted to 19th-century Louisiana landscape painting in more than forty years. Inventing Acadia: Painting and Place in Louisiana will close on Sunday, January 26, along with Passage, a panoramic photo installation in the Great Hall by Regina Agu. Friday, January 24, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA will include an Artist Perspective talk on Inventing Acadia by Hannah Chalew at 6 pm and a Gallery Talk at 6:30 pm by Southerly Gold, an artists collective whose multi sensory installation Land of Evangeline: Reconstructed is on view in the first-floor Creative Concept Studio. A book signing will follow the talk. Music by free feral and the Serpentine Choir will be included in the programming, along with the popular Art on the Spot drop-in activity table.

Sunday, January 26, 1 pm: Performance artist Megan Easley will present Waterlogue, a concert using water-based sound, in tribute to Passage. 1:30 pm: Regina Agu will discuss the installation. Both events are included with museum admission.

Les Cenelles is a contemporary string ensemble exploring the Creole diaspora through melody and memory.
|

Sunday, January 26, 6 pm: The string band Les Cenelles will present a concert of traditional Creole music and new compositions in the Great Hall titled Nèj Nwa. General admission $20 | NOMA members $15.

Solo exhibition by Torkwase Dyson explores Black Compositional Thought
Artist Torkwase Dyson will join art scholar LeRonn Brooks in conversation during Friday Nights at NOMA on January 24, 7 pm, upon the opening of the solo exhibition Torkwase Dyson: Black Compositional Thought | 15 Paintings for the Plantationocene.

When completed, the newly renovated auditorium complex will allow for a versatile performance and event space.

Renovation underway to build multifunctional auditorium
Construction has begun to transform NOMA's existing auditorium into a flexible and contemporary space ideal for hosting a wider range of events and programs, from theater-in-the-round to banquets, along with movies, lectures, music, dance, and other performances. Once completed, the auditorium will be flat-floored with surround sound and theatrical lighting, with room for 360 visitors (a capacity increase of 140). In the interim, select NOMA programs will be held in a space adjacent to the ground-floor main exhibition galleries.

Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm.
Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call (504) 658-4153 to verify.

Studio KIDS! workshops open for enrollment
From January through Studio KIDS! presents eight workshops for children ages 5 to 10 who want to get creative and learn art-making techniques inspired by works at NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The classes are held Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm; cost per class: $25 members | $30 nonmembers. The first workshop of the new year starts

Teen Days of Service scheduled through spring 2020
Teens of all ages are invited to participate in monthly days of service in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on the following Saturdays: January 25, February 29, March 28, and April 25, from 8:30 to 11:30 am. Contact Garden Manager Pamela Buckman at (504) 658-4153.

In the weeks ahead
Friday, January 31, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA takes on a Scottish theme with poetry, music, food and drink for a Robert Burns Night, presented in collaboration with the NOLA Project theater company.
Friday, February 7, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA will include a panel discussion on African art and music by Bamboula 2000.
Wednesday, March 25: SAVE THE DATE! Sponsorships and tickets are on sale for the patron preview, lectures, and a luncheon for the 2020 Art in Bloom presented by IBERIABANK. The showcase of floral displays will be on view from Thursday, March 26*, through Sunday, March 29. (*Note that public hours will be from 1 - 7 pm on March 26; standard hours apply to all other days.)
