Dear Cathy,
Hearing the words “you have cancer” can be the most isolating moment of someone’s life. Especially now, as many of us are practicing self-quarantine and social distancing, taking care of your mental and emotional health as a cancer patient, survivor, caregiver, or loved one is incredibly important.
The American Cancer Society’s 24/7 helpline for answers and support is available to you during this time, no matter what part of the cancer journey you are on.
Here are some more tips for maintaining emotional and mental well-being during these difficult times:
Spend time with family and friends. While you are social-distancing, this may mean more texts and phone calls, experimenting with video calling, sending an email or e-card, or joining online support groups.
Go outside when you can, get regular physical activity, and eat a healthy diet.
Get plenty of sleep, and try out books, websites, apps, and videos that can help you relax.
Find ways that help you laugh, like talking with other upbeat people, playing games, and watching movies.
Do things you’ve been wanting to do at home, like decluttering, trying new recipes, or reorganizing cupboards and closets.
Focus on your spiritual side by reading, participating in online discussions, or communing with nature, journaling, meditating, or creating art.
Sincerely,
Your American Cancer Society
