Hurricane Safety August 24, 2020

FRESH & LOCAL:

Hurricane Safety

The safety of customers, market staff, and our farmers and food producers is always our top priority, so while we pride ourselves in having a reliably rain or shine market, extreme weather events like hurricanes can cause a change of plans.

  • CCFM Box delivery has been postponed to Friday.
  • Tomorrow’s Uptown market is cancelled.
  • We’re watching the weather for Wednesday. Online ordering for the Wednesday Bucktown Drive Thru is still open. In the event we need to cancel that market, your order will be cancelled and refunded.

For Crescent City Farmers Market and other farmers markets across the Gulf Coast, hurricane season means sometimes making the difficult call of closing markets. When we consider canceling a market, it is always with the goal of staying open if possible and we pore over spaghetti noodle models and consult with our vendor representatives and farmers, saving the call for as late as possible to have the best certainty of the weather to come, while making sure vendors will be able to harvest or catch the things they need to bring to the market. We also consider the trip that vendors have to take to market, and their safety on the road. So if the 2-4 hours before market opens or after it closes look bad, we’ll cancel to keep folks off of treacherous roads. Unfortunately, that’s why it may look sunny and beautiful on the day we cancelled the market.

While we certainly recommend following all of the City’s recommended hurricane precautions here are some helpful CCFM staff hints for those sheltering in place:

  • Right now, fill bags with water and place them in the freezer. During an extended power outage, they’ll help keep everything cold. If they thaw you’ll have more drinking water.
  • Use that frozen catfish or okra you were saving. Go ahead and make that summertime gumbo or fry up that catfish.
  • Prioritize what’s in the fridge and needs to be used first. Fresh beans and peas should be eaten first. Eggplant can last longer in the fridge.
  • Leave those shelf stable items like butternut squash or less-than-perfectly-ripe tomatoes on the counter for later use.
  • Prep your snacks! Go ahead and boil your eggs for an easy and nutritious go-to.

If severe weather is afoot, check our social media or give us a call for changes in market schedule. Now put down those hurricane snacks and let’s get prepared!
