September 2020

Dear Advocates and Friends,

As we officially transition into Fall on September 22, we recognize that the new normal is here to stay for a while. This month’s newsletter taps into concepts typically associated with this season—gaining knowledge and navigating new experiences. Whether it’s helping kids attend school from home, finding ways to adjust to new schedules, or continuing to protect ourselves from COVID-19, we’ve all had to adapt and lean into our resiliency and CSC is here to support you. We’ve launched a digital community navigator named Ruby who provides information and tips on everything from protecting ourselves during the pandemic to finding health insurance or dealing with financial toxicity. You will even be able to submit your own questions for Ruby to answer.

As always, thank you for all that you do to advocate for and support everyone impacted by cancer.

Ask Ruby: Financial Toxicity

Dealing with cancer is challenging enough. The additional burden of high health care costs is scary. In this video Ruby helps to answer questions about financial toxicity.

One of the major themes dominating health care discussions today is that health care costs in the United States are proving unsustainable. Practices known as utilization management (UM) are one of the attempts the cost of health care has been addressed. We are releasing a series of blogs aimed at educating patients about different UM practices and techniques, how it impacts access to care, as well as advocacy opportunities to address those barriers to care.

Each month, the Cancer Policy Institute profiles advocates who have been engaged in cancer advocacy.
