GOOD FOOD CONCEPT OF THE WEEK:In addition to running farmers markets, a critical component of Market Umbrella’s work is to enhance food and nutrition access and awareness in our community. The Good Food Concept of the Week seeks to shed some light on this part of our work and also to demystify the jargon. |
Louisiana Harvest of the MonthThis week’s Good Food Concept is Louisiana Harvest of the Month – The Louisiana Harvest of the Month (LA HOM) program showcases locally grown foods in Louisiana schools, institutions, and communities. Each month, participating sites focus on promoting one locally grown item (e.g., winter squash). Activities could include serving local items in a meal or snack, offering taste tests, displaying LA HOM materials, or teaching educational lessons and activities. Louisiana Harvest of the Month is the perfect way to launch or grow a farm to school program, as it provides an easy framework to follow and ready-to-use materials. PICKS OF THE WEEK:The Great Louisiana Satsuma PeelEver been challenged to a “peel”? One of the many ways that schools are celebrating National Farm to School Month is by taking the Louisiana Farm to School Challenge! Last year, Market Umbrella helped connect over 9,000 students to local satsumas to take the challenge by doing the Great Louisiana Satsuma Peel - where 100% of a school’s students and staff peel and eat a satsuma together, and then celebrate with stickers! To participate in the challenge, a school identifies a farm to school activity, and pledges to do that activity during the month of October. The Great Louisiana Satsuma Peel is an easy-to-implement activity that everyone loves! If you are affiliated with a school as a student, parent, teacher, administrator, or food service provider and are interested in doing the Peel, Market Umbrella can help connect your school with local satsumas. We also have language you can use to celebrate the Peel with, and can help you out with fun stickers! Contact angelina@marketumbrella.org for assistance. |
It’s Satsuma Season! It is officially our favorite time of year - satsuma season. Cousin to the tangerine and clementine, this citrus variety has been grown in Japan for over 700 years! In the 1800s, the satsuma made its voyage to the New World and has been cultivated in southeastern Louisiana parishes ever since. This loose-skinned citrus is easy to peel and makes a great on-the-go snack for kids and adults alike. Sweet, juicy and a vitamin C powerhouse, its day-glo juice is like a cup of liquid sunshine and New Orleans’ first taste of fall. While the first of the season are usually green, rest assured that sugar content testing has verified that they’re plenty sweet now, and those sugars will only develop further as the season progresses. Great for juicing, mimosas, glazes and much more these orange globes can be stored for up to a month in the fridge. Available at all CCFM markets and in delivery boxes now! |
VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Star NurseryWelcome back to the market Star Nursery, a fifth generation family farm from Belle Chasse, LA. The Ranatza family started a truck farm in New Orleans after immigrating from Italy in the 1920s, then moved to Belle Chasse in the ‘40s and added citrus and a tree nursery to their repertoire. Now, not only do they attend CCFM markets, but also collaborate with us in our farm to school efforts, bringing fresh local fruit to New Orleans schools. You can currently find satsumas and persimmons at their table, and lemons and navels are on their way! Catch them at the Parkway and Bucktown drive thru markets, Uptown market, and in CCFM home delivery boxes throughout the season. |
RECIPE OF THE WEEK:Satsuma Ginger CakeThe holidays are quickly approaching, but be honest, you never need an excuse for cake! This week, we are ogling this satsuma ginger cake by food stylist Suzy Eaton complete with satsuma curd, fresh ginger and buttercream icing. Satsumas are popping up at all of our weekly markets, including the CCFM drive thru markets and CCFM home delivery boxes. Additionally, fresh baby ginger can be found at the Uptown market by way of Poche Family Farm for an extra local zing. Go ahead, have your cake and eat it too! What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter! |
