This Week at the Crescent City Farmers' Market

Happy Carrot Day! | April 4, 2022

FRESH & LOCAL:

Happy Carrot Day!

This time of year brings lovely temperate weather, beautiful markets and with it the end of winter crops. At markets we’re seeing last flushes of broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts, and the first of the spring alliums like fresh onions and green garlic. Carrots are celebrated today - International Carrot Day - and other spring favorites pop up in April holiday traditions.

Eggs, a symbol of spring, feature prominently this month in festive fare, whether they’re hard boiled in Easter and Seder meals, or providing protein-packed breakfasts before the fasting of Ramadan. Everyone’s got their secret to hard boiling eggs so that they peel more easily. One tried and true is that older eggs peel easier - so now’s the time to stock up! Beets, red cabbage, turmeric, and onions are all readily available at market now and are not only delicious but make vibrant natural food coloring that can be used to color eggs or frosting for festive confections. Pro tip: if you’re making your own dyes, unlike store-bought, homemade colors turn out better if eggs soak for several hours, even overnight.

Please note: This Sunday April 10th, we’ll be back at our usual spot at the Tad Gormley Stadium parking lot at Marconi @ Navarre, and the Sunday after we’ll be closed so our vendors can enjoy holiday time with family and friends.

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access for Market Vendors Training

Join us on April 11th from 4-5:30pm for the next free training in our spring vendor technical assistance series, “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access for Market Vendors”. In this training learn about how you as a local business owner can step into DEIA work to not only make your business more equitable, but contribute to our community's greater good and wellbeing. Recommended to attend: Farmers market vendors, other small food or direct-to-consumer retail businesses, and market or small business support organizations. Sessions are free - please RSVP here.

As part of Market Umbrella's ongoing commitment to support equity and racial justice in our community, our organization began a Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) Planning process at the end of 2021. We are examining our work both internally and externally, with the goal of ensuring that we are living out our mission and that our markets and programs truly reflect the community we serve, and this training is a part of that process.

Those Crazy Carrots!

What other vegetable can you find in a rainbow of colors including purple, yellow, red, orange, & white? Carrots are affordable and have a long shelf life. Tasty in sweet and savory dishes, they can be used in salad, sauces, juices, cakes and breads. Not to mention, carrots are exceedingly beneficial for our health, protecting your eyes and preventing chronic disease. With carrots, the options are just endless!

Celebrate the versatility of the carrot this week, by stopping at one of this week's markets and grabbing your bunch!

Don't forget to double your dollars with Market Match - every SNAP dollar spent at market is matched with an additional dollar for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables, up to $60 per visit.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

Honest Foods Co.

Smaller batches mean better bread baked with quality ingredients (and lots of love). Irinia K., founder of Honest Foods Company, believes bread is the soul of every meal and it shows in her breads and scones. What started out as a small hobby baking bread for her son has turned into a full fledged business with a growing following at the Tuesday Uptown and Sunday City Park Markets. Originally from Ukraine and Belarus, Irina and Vlad came to the U.S. when they were just teenagers. With family and friends still in Ukraine, Honest is currently donating their net proceeds to aid groups to support their community back home. Check out their Instagram for upcoming fundraising events and ways you can support them as they navigate this challenging time. And don’t forget to head over to their booth and buy a loaf of Jewish rye or challah to up your holiday table offerings and show them support!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:

Chef Chris Lynch’s Chicken Pot Pie

Market Umbrella and BIA (Broadmoor Improvement Association) have joined together with local chefs to create a four part cooking series, How Do You Cook Dat?*. This series highlights seasonal produce that can be found not only at the Crescent City Farmers Market, but also at BIA’s food pantry and community garden. Whether you are new to cooking or a culinary aficionado, these videos are simple and easy to follow along.

Chris Lynch, Executive Chef of Atchafalaya continues the series with a robust, easy to assemble dish that is comforting. Check out this sneak peek of Chef Chris's veggie-filled, seasonal Chicken Pot Pie.

The full video will be released on Saturday, April 9, on social media and the MU website. Follow us on Instagram to catch How do you Cook Dat: Chicken Pot Pie!

Sunday Walk Up All Day! | October 25, 2021

FRESH & LOCAL:

Sunday Walk Up All Day!

Starting this weekend, the Sunday City Park market will run as a walk up market for the entire market - from 8am to noon! Based on what drive thru shoppers said in a recent survey, the contactless drive thru was an important innovation at the onset of COVID, but is less important now. We’ll keep the convenience with preorders through WhatsGood so you can still shop ahead and either pickup orders directly from vendors or choose a new curbside option for contactless pickup from 8am to noon. Not all vendors participate in pre-orders, so if you’re looking online for something you’re not finding, you can always check our website to find out who will be at market.

Come celebrate our new, longer walk up hours this Halloween which will have fun for the whole family! Get your groceries in the sunshine and fresh air - including first of the season satsumas - while enjoying live music, kids activities and prizes, spooky take-home crafts, a photo booth, and plenty of holiday spirit. Hope to see you there!

She has worn many hats, helping with communications, graphic design, working markets during COVID pivots, and more, as well as her development work. Her passion and experience have been wonderful assets to Market Umbrella, and she will definitely be missed. The Sweetest Treat

If you live in the coastal south, the slow transition of summer into fall brings slightly cooler weather and the joy of the local satsuma harvests. Satsumas, sometimes referred to interchangeably as clementines or tangerines, is a type of mandarin orange that is grown here locally in Louisiana. It's seedless, easy to peel, and softly sweet with just the right amount of tartness to balance the flavor out.

pick of the week

Originating in Japan, satsumas have a high cold tolerance allowing them to grow in many places other citrus varieties cannot. The fruit is so balanced and versatile that it can be eaten peeled, on salads, in sauces and dressings, or baked into something decadent like an upside down cake or cheesecake. If you ordered your local Top Box Crescent City Farmers Market Box for this Tuesday you're in luck because satsumas will be included for you to enjoy! Don't forget to place your orders for a Tuesday delivery by Friday afternoon of the week before in order to get all of the fresh, local produce delivered directly to your door.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

Zest for Success

Bright in flavor and color, satsumas are an easy pop of hydration that can be enjoyed at home or on-the-go. Due to Hurricane Ida, citrus is rolling in a little late this year. Don’t fret - Star Nursery, an orchard that started back in the late 60s in Belle Chasse, is back and with a bounty of citrus. Be sure to drop in for a bag of New Orleans’ favorite fall treat as Star Nursery will be at all three of our weekly markets. Citrus fruits contain a variety of minerals and vitamins the body needs (such as B vitamins, magnesium, copper, and potassium, to name a few), and they are a great source of fiber. A few satsumas contain all the Vitamin C you need in a day, strengthening your immune system and keeping your skin smooth. On top of that, citrus is rich in plant compounds like flavonoids and carotenoids (antioxidants) and essential oils. Besides the health benefits, citrus, and satsumas in particular, are a sweet and healthy way to snack your way through the fall season, and easy for little fingers to peel, providing perhaps the most convenient kid snack there is.

CRAFT OF THE WEEK:

Satsuma Pumpkins

Transform a basket of satsumas into these beautiful mini pumpkins. This is such a quick and easy way to make Halloween decorations, to spook up the fruit bowl or add some fun to your child’s packed lunch.

craft of the week

You will need:

  • Satsumas or tangerines
  • A black permanent marker

How to make:

  • Use a permanent marker, such as a black Sharpie, to draw the faces.
  • Satsumas have waxy skins so you may need to draw on your faces, let the ink dry, and then go over them again to make them look really bold.
  • It’s that easy. Have lots of fun making a whole family of pumpkins, each with different expressions.

RECIPES OF THE WEEK:

Satsuma Cheesecake

You will love this satsuma orange cheesecake recipe. The tang of cream cheese and sour cream in the filling rounds out the citrusy sweetness for an unforgettable dessert.
