Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season

Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season

by touroinfirmary
The Touro Infirmary Foundation
With the end of the calendar year fast approaching, we find ourselves on the doorstep of the holiday season, one marked by a distinct spirit of giving. This is a time to celebrate our loved ones by giving them personal and thoughtful gifts, but it is also a time to give back to our community. Empowering others to pay it forward is very important to us here at the Touro Infirmary Foundation, so we offer you a few ways to express your gratitude to our New Orleans community that will make an impact and ensure that we start off on the right foot as we walk together into the new year.

Food Bank Volunteering

Food has the distinct ability to bring people together, especially during the holiday season. Help others share the happiness that comes from a meal served with love by volunteering your time to a local food bank. Check out organizations such as Second Harvest Food Bank or New Orleans Food Pantry. Any type of volunteering during is impactful and not just during the holidays. If food bank volunteering is not for you, considering volunteering at a hospital such as Touro Infirmary.

Toy Donation

Here’s a way to give back, while also cleaning out your children’s toy chest! There are countless organizations around the city that accept new and gently used toy donations, and what better way to show that you care while putting smiles on the faces of our community’s youngest residents?  Consider donating to Children’s Hospital.

Nursing Homes

Offer both your presents, and your presence to a nursing home in your area. Help with meal distribution, hang decorations, and chat with residents to make them feel included and cared for by fellow members of their community. Consider volunteering at Woldenberg Village by contacting Rita Austin at 504-367-5640.

Giving

Time is always a gift to those who receive it. Since time is a luxury and not always available, financial gift giving in any amount is another option to give back this time of year. The age old saying that “no amount is too small” is truer today than ever. Friend raising and micro giving are making great impacts in people’s lives all over the world. Consider supporting the Touro Infirmary Foundation this Giving Tuesday. Donations to the Touro Infirmary Foundation support the purchase of vital equipment, help fight transportation barriers for cancer care patients, support new parents with education classes, and so much more. Visit www.touro.com/give and direct your donation to an area of healthcare that is meaningful to you.
While exchanging gifts with your loved ones can be a wonderful holiday tradition, nothing can compare to the feeling of joy you get from giving back. We hope you are inspired to get involved in your community this season, and wish you Happy Holidays from our Touro Infirmary family!

NEW POST from Julie, the Cancer Dietitian

Recipe Video, Podcast Interviews and Julie’s Other Online “Appearances”

By Julie Lanford MPH, RD, CSO, LDN
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
In case you missed it, I did a Facebook Live Recipe Video for Chef Malena’s Vegan Pumpkin Pie on the Patient Power FB page a few weeks ago. Here it is!

Nutrition + Cooking Workshop

For all you local cancer survivors and caregivers, I wanted you to know that my next Nutrition + Cooking Workshop is scheduled for this Saturday, Dec 1st from 10am – 2pm. We are going to learn to make a few of Chef Don’s recipes “holiday version” and also my tips on how to approach holiday eating.
FYI – I don’t think you should (ever) be worried about the calories. Rather, during holiday meals, I want you to enjoy your favorite recipes and the time you spend with friends and family. Remember, you’re supposed to overeat sometimes!
For more on my holiday meal approach, check out my previous post here: Permission to Overeat on Holiday Meals! Plus 5 Holiday Eating Tips
If you’re not local, or can’t come to the workshop, I will post the recipes afterwards! And of course, you can find many of my favorite recipes here.

GOOD NUTRITION FOR PEOPLE FACING COLORECTAL CANCER

I spent the last 2 articles talking about bowel health (Simple Choices Each Day Can Enhance Bowel Health and 7 Daily Habits for Bowel Regularity: Preventing and Managing Constipation). I even did a facebook live with the 7 tips for bowel regularity.
HOWEVER, I know that for anyone who has been treated for colorectal cancer, your bowels can be very finicky and my recent tips might not be applicable for you.
Instead… you might find this interview helpful!

You can find it on Cancer.Net here as well as on Apple Podcasts and Google Play.

It is for the ASCO (American Society for Clinical Oncology) podcast on colorectal cancer nutrition and I am on with Suzanne Dixon, an RD and epidemiologist, talking about nutrition for people in treatment for colorectal cancer and those who are colorectal cancer survivors.

Tools for Coping with Weight Gain/Loss During Cancer Treatment

In addition to podcast interviews, I have recently done this educational video for Patient Power, an online cancer community that provides education and support from experts and also from survivors who are dealing with the challenges of living life while facing a cancer diagnosis.
During this particular interview, Andrew (survivor and founder of Patient Power) and I discuss the following:
Depending on the individual, some patients unintentionally gain or lose weight during cancer treatment. How can patients nourish their bodies and maintain weight? What small changes can people make to their daily routine to enhance their diet? Patient Power founder Andrew Schorr is joined by Julie Lanford, oncology dietician and wellness director from Cancer Services, to tackle weight issues that accompany cancer treatments and share expert advice to help patients meet their weight goals. Julie discusses reasons for weight fluctuation or changes in metabolism, tips for managing proper nutrition and practical steps for patients to take to eat well during and after treatment. Julie also explains when it’s appropriate to use a dietary supplement and what kind is most beneficial for cancer patients.

Watch the interview here!

I am a regular contributor for Patient Power, and you’ll want to keep up with what they’ve got going on so you don’t miss anything! You can go to this page to find my other interviews for Patient Power.
Here’s the list so far!
–  Julie
