Fresh & Local:
Happy Labor Day, Weather Update on Tuesday Market
We were going to write about Labor Day and how it doesn’t indicate summer’s over this far down in southeastern Louisiana, but something else very typical of the late summer came up this weekend - tropical storm warnings!
After poring over weather reports and checking with our producers, we’ve decided to open the Uptown market early tomorrow at 8:30am. While the storm surge is keeping fishermen off the water today and we won’t have seafood at market tomorrow, farmers are in the fields harvesting as this newsletter is reaching your inbox. Most of our vendors come from within 200 miles, so several of our Tuesday vendors will need up to two hours to get home safely. The high winds and rain don’t look like they should reach us until later in the day tomorrow, but we’ll keep our eyes on the skies and on the weather radar and close market early if necessary. As always, safety is our primary concern.
The silver lining here is that while we need to stock up before the storm, farmers are looking to save everything they can from the storm, by way of harvesting and selling it. So come on
out to the market, support your local farmers and fill the fridge while we keep an eye on Gordon’s progress.

Muscadine Grapes
We’re between peach season and citrus season, but this time of year we do have the “Grape of the South,” also known as muscadines! Muscadines have been gathered for centuries in our region to make jams, jellies, preserves, and wine. They come in a dark purple color or a greenish pink and grow on vines like any grape. The term muscadine usually refers to the dark purple ones, while the lighter ones are sometimes referred to as scuppernongs or bronze muscadine. Their taste is a musky sweet (hence the name) and they’re unlike the grapes you’re used to since their skin is thick and slightly bitter, and you’ll find a few large seeds nestled inside. For this reason, many people will squeeze out the soft center to eat, spit the seeds and discard the peel. And of course they are nutritious! Muscadines are filled with fiber and potassium and are low in calories. Find muscadine grapes at our Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday CBD markets and as a refreshing seasonal
kombucha flavor at Insanitea on Tuesdays and Saturday CBD. Ask our vendors and staff members for their favorite ways to eat them!

Call for Bakers
CCFM is growing and we need bakers! Farmers markets are a destination for artisan bread shoppers in search of that perfect crusty loaf - no market would be complete without good bread. We have opportunities currently, and are working on additional ones for the near future. Please remember, as a small business incubator, we are looking to support newer, smaller ventures and our vendors should not have their own retail storefront in the New Orleans area, although wholesales to local shops is acceptable. Stop by the market or

Vendor of the Week:
Mizell Farms
The Mizell family has been attending the Crescent City Farmers Markets for generations with a wide selection of vegetable and herb plants, as well as bedding and decorative plants and flowers. We welcome Jim Mizell back to Tuesdays beginning next week and are so glad he’s mended. Market has not been the same without his sage, and pragmatic advice. For all of you who’ve inquired over the past few weeks, stop by and say hi starting September 11th, and pick up everything you’ll need to plant your fall garden, including the wisdom, generously shared, that we would be gardening failures without.
Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:
Bua Thai Kitchen
Starting this Tuesday Bua Thai Kitchen will be out at the Green Plate Special tent. Bua Thai Kitchen offers authentic tastes and experiences of Thailand through creative, healthy plant-based dishes. Inspired by her experience living in Thailand, and by the power of plants, chef Ashley Weinstein Berner creates dishes using local produce. Most items are gluten-free. Everything will be available to go so you can stop by and grab your breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This week’s menu will feature Pad Grapow, Thai Oaks Bowl, Thai Pumpkin Salad and more!
