It’s Fall, Y’all | September 24, 2018

FRESH & LOCAL:

Fall Fruit

Leaves turning colors, chunky knit sweaters, brisk fall air-- that’s not exactly autumn in Louisiana. Instead we have the pleasure of waking up to temperatures slightly below 80 degrees, and the arrival of citrus, greens, and others to the farmers market. As the temperature inches its way down, we have turnips, radishes, and the fall crop of field tomatoes (creole or otherwise) to look forward to. Our leaves will continue to be green and you will probably have to take off that cardigan by lunchtime, but we will celebrate the season with pumpkins, in soup or latte form. In honor of keeping the Uggs packed up for at least one more month, please enjoy this haiku:
Autumn vegetables
Squash, pumpkin, potatoes, greens
Yum, please give me more!

Louisiana Farm to School Conference

Timed to celebrate National Farm to School Month in October, the 2018 Louisiana Farm to School Conference is a two-day event which will take place on October 9th and 10th in Baton Rouge. Tuesday afternoon is a grower/buyer meet up from 4-7pm with local growers setting up booths and attendance from school system and other buyers to see what’s available locally. Growers attend for free so register, and come on out and see what new opportunities await! If you need help navigating safety certification for selling to schools, please contact angelina@marketumbrella.org
Wednesday hosts traditional conference activities with tracks on Sourcing, Growing and Learning for practitioners in any of the three walks of farm to school. Keynote speaker Chef Ann Cooper, the “Renegade Lunch Lady” should not be missed. Hope to see you there!

Become a CCFM Vendor

CCFM is growing and we need growers, fishers, and bakers! We have opportunities currently, and are working on additional ones for the near future. Please remember, as a small business incubator, we are looking to support newer, smaller ventures and our vendors should not have their own retail storefront in the New Orleans area, although wholesales to local shops is acceptable. We are excited for you to join our family! Stop by the market or contact Manager Manager cristina@marketumbrella.org for more information and apply to be a vendor here.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

L’Hoste Citrus

Lester and Linda L’Hoste of Braithwaite, Louisiana will return to the Tuesday Uptown market this week for their 23rd year of selling citrus at the CCFM. Lester is proud to be one of the only certified organic citrus growers in the region, and has recently retired from his day job as a chemist, giving him extra time to grow his citrus and expand his farm. For now, look for his table full of organic satsumas and persimmons - he says it’s among the highest quality crops he’s ever had. In the coming months as we delve deeper into citrus season you can expect meyer lemons, navel oranges, blood oranges, grapefruit, and kumquats, too.

TUESDAY’S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:

Bua Thai Kitchen

Bua Thai Kitchen will be out at the Green Plate Special tent again this Tuesday! Bua Thai Kitchen offers authentic tastes and experiences of Thailand through creative, healthy plant-based dishes. Inspired by her experience living in Thailand, and by the power of plants, chef Ashley Weinstein Berner creates dishes using local produce. Most items are gluten-free. Everything will be available to go so you can stop by and grab your breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
