We launched the new Crescent City Farmers Market App at the beginning of November, and since then, vendors like Two Dog Farms and South of Eden have hopped on board. That means more fresh, local, naturally grown produce and plant-based prepared foods and beverages like shrubs, pickles and ferments, and coconut cashew yogurt are available for you to view and purchase while you’re at home, at the office or on the go.
With the holidays fast approaching and the weather getting colder, now is a great time to try out the app. Simplify your holiday meal planning and avoid the cold by browsing available items, and placing orders in advance to make sure you get everything on your shopping list. Need gift ideas for your foodie friends and family? The CCFM app has got you covered with items like hot sauce and veggie celebrity printed stationery and clothing from River Queen Greens, tea blends from Spicy Lady and J&D Blueberry Farms, pickled veggies from Poche Farms and Pickled NOLA, or a Crescent City Farmers Market T-Shirt from yours truly!
Not only does the app make farmers market shopping more convenient, it is an invaluable tool for our network of producers. Our local farmers, fishers, ranchers, bakers and makers get the security of making sales before market starts, which helps even out those rainy days or slower market days when events make getting to market more difficult. And in this transaction, the vendor gets the full listed price for their product (read more here if you’re interested in learning more about why the farmers’ share of the food dollar has only been going down, and is currently at a record low of $.122 cents per dollar spent on food). Patronizing our local growers helps ensure their business’ sustainability, which helps us create a resilient food system where everyone has access to fresh, local produce picked when ripe and chock full of nutrients (and not all those pesky GMOs and chemicals) and subsequent farming generations can make a decent living growing food.

An Evening with Alon and Emily Shaya

Please join us on Monday, January 7th at Saba Restaurant for an evening with Alon and Emily Shaya, benefitting the Crescent City Farmers Market. Emily will prepare her famous red beans, Saba will serve snacks, and wine, beer and a signature cocktail are all part of the ticket price. We’ll have live music, grab and go dinners if you are in a hurry, and kids activities if you plan on sticking around. The event is from 5-8pm at Saba Restaurant located at 5757 Magazine Street. Raffle prizes include a Sonder gift certificate, a Country Girls Creamery dairy tour for 6 (including a cheese wheel), and a Contemporary Arts Center membership and commemorative print. Tickets are $65 for adults, $25 for kids and proceeds benefit Crescent City Farmers Market programs and operations. Purchase tickets here.

Kohlrabi

You’ve probably spotted these alien-like knobby purple or green specimens at the market recently and wondered what the heck are these odd-shaped things with the strange name. Kohlrabi aka German turnips are the weird, but delightful cousins to cauliflower and Brussels sprouts in the brassica family. With a flavor and texture similar to the tender stem of broccoli, kohlrabi can be eaten cooked or raw and offers a mildly sweet bite like a crisp apple. So what do you do with them? They are surprisingly versatile and can be steamed, roasted, souped, sliced thin on top of your salad or as an addition or base for a slaw. Catch these cool weather crops at the market through spring!

Tomott’s Cajun Farm

Welcome back Tomott’s Cajun Farm! It has been far too long since your sweet cherry tomatoes graced our presence. Greg, Ann, Kelly and Rachel Sanamo have been with CCFM for 8 years and counting and can be found popping in at the Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday CBD markets with more regularity as the maters ripen. The Sanamos have a one-acre hydroponic farm in Larose, Louisiana (Lafourche Parish) just outside of Grand Isle so they can bring us tomatoes while it’s too cold outside for field grown. While tomatoes are their main thing, Tomott’s also grows hydroponic eggplant and dabbles in field grown green beans, amongst other veggies. Say hello at the market and check out our featured recipe for an excellent way to enjoy their beautiful rainbow cherries!

Gabrielle Restaurant

Our good friends Greg and Mary Sonnier of Gabrielle Restaurant join us under the GPS tent for this, the last Tuesday market of the year, to round out a year of local chefs committed to cooking with local ingredients at the Uptown Market. Originally located on Esplanade Avenue, Gabrielle Restaurant reopened its doors on Orleans Avenue in September 2017 after a twelve year Hurricane Katrina hiatus and it’s there that award winning Chef Greg Sonnier serves his take on Cajun food with New Orleans flair. On the menu this week is broccoli and cheddar cheese soup, roasted red pepper chili with cornbread, muffaletta pasta salad, and more. Come out for some heartwarming dishes to keep you cozy in this chilly weather!

Roasted Cherry Tomato Caprese Salad

Imagine if grilled cheese and tomato soup had a sophisticated, but sociable cousin who went to art school and owns a gallery and a poodle. That’s what we think of this roasted cherry tomato Caprese salad from Bon Appetit and just love the deep, umami yet sweet tomato-ey flavor that roasting tomatoes releases. It’s delicious and cozy grownup finger-food. Grab a couple of pints of cherry tomatoes from Tomott’s Cajun Farm and some fresh mozzarella from Country Girls Creamery or T&R Dairy at the Uptown market and get roastin’.
