It’s been a little while since I blogged! I always get great ideas but then can’t seem to pull together enough time to put something down. With all of my other “work hats,” blogging seems to fall last on my list. But it is still one of my favorite things to do.
Most of my blogging ideas actually come from you – my readers and those who come to my programs or have joined me on social media! Your questions, emails and comments are always helpful in guiding me to the latest questions and topics in cancer nutrition.
Today though, I’m going BACK TO THE BASICS!
I wanted to go back to the building blocks because I have a lot of new followers (yes, I look at all the names, zip codes and “types” of subscribers that I get). If you’re new to Cancer Dietitian – WELCOME! If you’re a long time follower, or somewhere in between, thanks for hanging along for the ride. : – )
The basics that I want to cover today are what I call “The Cancer Dietitian’s Nutrition Philosophy”! It’s how I start many of my classes, seminars, webinars and workshops. The reason is that I need to build a good base of understanding for my followers so that you can start to filter out the junk headlines on your own and feel confident in knowing that not everything you read or hear is true!
[Side note: I would be willing to bet that most of what you read or hear about nutrition is actually NOT true. I call it job security for dietitians, LOL!]
The Cancer Dietitian’s Nutrition Philosophy:
- No single food or food substance can prevent or cure cancer. Also, no single food or food substance can cause cancer – there are no toxic foods.
- A combination of foods consumed in a mostly plant-based diet plays an important role in maintaining healthy cells and supporting immunity. Meat and dairy can have a place on your plate, if you choose. What’s most important is that 2/3 or more is plants.
- Your body prefers to get nutrients from food, not pills. Your body best utilizes nutrients when they are in the food form!
- Eating is an opportunity to promote your health. Aim to give your body the tools it needs each day.Rather than worrying about what foods you should “avoid,” key in on the foods your body NEEDS!

- You don’t have to be perfect! Eating should nourish your soul as well. Use the 80/20 rule. The purpose of having good health is to be able to ENJOY LIFE! Don’t choose a way of eating that reduces your quality of life, or prevents you from eating out or enjoying your favorite foods. Find a way to get balance and have those “sometimes foods.” If you’re eating to nourish your body 80% of the time, and choosing foods to nourish your soul 20% of the time, that’s a great balance!
And if you haven’t already checked out my webinars, I talk a lot about what it means to eat a plant based diet. Check the webinars out here!
Sometimes you just need recipe inspiration! I have lots of great ones. My follower favorites are:
Happy Spring!!

But here’s the great thing about working in the field of cancer. You quickly learn how to value and celebrate each and every day that you have with family and good friends. Needless to say, I am excited for this milestone.
When you click to donate – under specific event, be sure to select ‘Cancer Dietitian turns 40’ so that it is put in the milestone fund!
