Celebrate French art, cuisine, music, and film during Friday Nights at NOMA on July 12

Timed to coincide with Bastille Day, NOMA will host a French Fête on Friday, July 12 from 5 - 9 pm with programs for visitors of all ages.

5 - 8 pm | Art on the Spot a la française drop-in activity table

6 pm | Artful Palate cooking demo with Café NOMA culinary curator Chris Montero in Stern Auditorium

Food trucks from Crepes a la Carte, Bonafried, and Frencheez will be parked in the entry circle. Café NOMA, all exhibitions and galleries, and the Museum Shop will remain open until 9 pm.

Artist's Choice Film Series presents Sidewalk Stories

As part of an ongoing Artist's Choice Film Series in conjunction with Bodies of Knowledge, on Saturday, July 13, at 2 pm, artist Garrett Bradley will introduce Sidewalk Stories, a largely silent movie from 1989 that tells the story of a young African American man raising an orphaned girl after her father is murdered. The film is a modern adaptation of Charlie Chaplin's The Little Tramp. (Rated R | 1 hour, 37 minutes | Watch the trailer below)

Vote NOMA in Gambit's "Best of New Orleans" poll

Voting is now open for the 2019 "Best of New Orleans" poll in the alt-weekly newspaper Gambit. Type in New Orleans Museum of Art under the Best Museum category in the Local Life section at this link. The poll is open through July 31. 
August is Museum Month with free entry to partnering museums for NOMA members

August is New Orleans Museum Month, a collaboration among cultural institutions of all sizes across the metro area. NOMA members have the opportunity to visit all partnering museums FREE OF CHARGE for the entire month. A NOMA membership permits free entry for two persons to any participating museum with no limits to the number of visits. Join NOMA now or call (504) 658-4130 or visit the front desk.

Videos by Iranian exile artist Shirin Neshat will be screened every Wednesday

Three videos by Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat will be screened on continuous loop from 10 am to 1 pm every Wednesday through October 9 (excluding July 17 and 31) in Stern Auditorium as part of the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. Titled Turbulent, Rapture, and Fervor, the short films capture the dichotomies of modern life in Iran and implications of the 1979 Islamic revolution upon women. Sign up now for remaining Summer Art Camps

Summer Art Camps are now underway, and a few spaces remain in the weeks come. Check availability and enroll now in the remaining three weeklong sessions through August 2:
  • July 15 - 19: "Puppet Performance" for ages 5 - 7
  • July 22 - 26: "Art in the Big Easy" for ages 8 - 10
  • July 29 - August 2: "Inspired by Africa" for ages 8 - 10
The fee is $300 per week for NOMA members | $400 per week for nonmembers.
Baby Artsplay features interactive Saturday morning workshops for newborns/infants and 3-4-year-olds

Instill a love of art at a young age through a guided, hands-on gallery experience. With support from The Helis Foundation, teaching artists from Young Audiences Wolf Trap will provide a free six-part workshop series on Saturday mornings designed to instruct caregivers on how to use the arts at home to promote early learning. Workshop 6 concludes the series on Saturday, July 13, for children ages 0-3 from 10:30 to 11 am, followed by a workshop for 3-4-year-olds from 11 to 11:30 am. Register for Baby Artsplay at Eventbrite or call 504.658.4128 for additional information. The series will return in October.

Attend a talk, tour, gallery activation, or concert

Guided tours of the museum are offered daily at 1 pm. Tours of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at noon, weather permitting. Call 504.658.4153 to verify.

Allison Young will lead visitors through Bodies of Knowledge on Wednesday, July 10, at 12 pm.

Photographer Jonathan Traviesa will discuss themes in the exhibition You Are Here: A Brief History of Photography and Place on Wednesday, July 10, at 3 pm

Artist Wafaa Bilal will be on site in Bodies of Knowledge for a Gallery Talk on Wednesday, July 17, at 12 pm, followed by an activation of his installation 168:01, a work that encourages visitors to take a blank white book in exchange for a book that will ultimately restock a destroyed university library in Baghdad. Musician Mahmoud Chouki will join trumpeter Steve Lands in an improvisational concert on Wednesday, July 17, from 3 - 4 pm, as part of the Safar music series in conjunction with Bodies of Knowledge.
Free admission for military families through Labor Day

The New Orleans Museum of Art is pleased to once again participate in BlueStar Museums, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, BlueStar Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America. 

Each summer since 2010, Blue Star Museums have offered free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day (Monday, September 2). More than 2,000 museums across America are participating in Blue Star Museums
Wellness Classes among the artworks 

NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Yoga in the Sculpture Garden: Saturday, July 12, 8 - 9 am

Tai Chi/Chi Kung: Monday, July 15, 6 - 7 pm

Classes are $5; FREE for NOMA members and East Jefferson Wellness Center members. To register, call East Jefferson Healthfinder at 504.456.5000.
In the weeks ahead

Friday, July 19, 5 - 9 pm: Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal will deliver a lecture during Friday Nights at NOMA about his interactive installation 168:01, on view in Bodies of Knowledge, which invites visitors to stock an austere white bookshelf of blank books with published works that will replenish a destroyed university library in Baghdad.

Friday, July 26, 5 - 9 pm: Friday Nights at NOMA features Mahmoud Chouki in collaboration with jazz pianist Oscar Rossignoli for a Safar improvisational concert.
