October 13 has historically been recognized as Metastatic
Breast Cancer Awareness Day, but this year Susan G. Komen’s Center for Public
Policy is changing that to Metastatic Breast Cancer Action Day. There are currently more than 154,000 women living with
metastatic breast cancer in the United States alone, and these individuals need lawmakers to take action.

We are partnering with METAvivor for their Stage IV
Stampede in Washington, D.C. this week. Tomorrow, Dr. Kelly Shanahan, a woman
living with metastatic breast cancer since 2013, will be taking over the @KomenAdvocacy twitter channel to
share her story, why public policy and advocacy is critical and providing live updates from the event.
We invite you to follow along with us tomorrow as Kelly
visits with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and most importantly, to use your voice
and join us in taking action by contacting your elected officials.
Under current regulations, metastatic breast cancer patients
are subject to a 5-month waiting period for Social Security Disability
Insurance (SSDI) and a 24-month waiting period for eligible Medicare benefits. Metastatic breast
cancer patients do not have time to wait for the treatments they require. The
Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act, will provide metastatic breast
cancer patients access to the care they need by waiving both waiting periods.
Join us in
taking action and visit our
twitter page tomorrow to learn more about why you should get involved.
Thank you for continuing to join us in this important work!
Sincerely,
Susan G. Komen Center for Public Policy |
