FRESH & LOCAL:CCFM Bucktown Harbor Hybrid Returns to Friday Evenings!We are back to Fridays, baby! Starting this week, November 6th, you can make your groceries at the glorious Bucktown Harbor on Fridays from 3-7 pm. Now a hybrid market, you have the choice of shopping outside, in person, in the fresh air and sunlight, OR order in advance for contactless curbside pickup though WhatsGood (pre-order Tuesdays through Thursdays). We’ve got a stellar line up including all of your favorites - so stock up on local fruits and veg, artisan bread, fresh shrimp, and prepared food to take home! Zeta has impacted several of our vendors, so expect new additions to the lineup in coming weeks as folks return. GOOD FOOD CONCEPT OF THE WEEK:In addition to running farmers markets, a critical component of Market Umbrella’s work is to enhance food and nutrition access and awareness in our community. The Good Food Concept of the Week seeks to shed some light on this part of our work and also to demystify the jargon. |
Bumper CropThis week’s Good Food Concept is Bumper Crop – An agricultural term that refers to an unusually productive harvest. Citrus tends to run in cycles with several average years punctuated by a high productivity year every three years or so. By all accounts this year was on track to be a banner satsuma and citrus year for CCFM growers, in other words, they were expecting a bumper crop. Our citrus growers tend to come to us from Plaquemines Parish, southwest of New Orleans and outside of levee protection. These low lying wetlands are great for growing citrus, but depending on a storm’s path, can bear the brunt of high wind speeds as a hurricane makes landfall, as happened last week with Zeta. Vendors like Star Nursery, L’Hoste Citrus, A&K Citrus, and Graham’s Harvest - all based in Plaquemines Parish - are reporting significant losses. We’re expecting to see them back to market this season, but likely not this week, and probably not for as long as is usual. |
PICKS OF THE WEEK:Hurricane ZetaUnlucky number seven. After dodging six major gulf south storms this hurricane season, Hurricane Zeta swept in leaving more than two million power outages, the largest in 2020. It’s been a difficult week (or should we say year?), but this too shall pass. In true Southern hospitality style, we Louisianians help our neighbors to weather through. If you’ve got a crawfish pot, make a big batch of gumbo for the block. Unload the fridge with some community grilling - here’s how long the food in your fridge, freezer will last. Set up a charging station for friends who are still out of power so you can keep in touch. And once you’ve finished your yard, help you neighbors clean up theirs, just be careful of downed power lines. The Crescent City Farmers Market will be here when you are ready to make your groceries, supporting local farmers and food producers, many of whom are in the midst of their own hurricane recovery. November 30th can’t come soon enough, but remember: the bad days make the good ones better! |

SNAP Customers Can Replace Groceries Lost to Power Outage!High winds from Zeta caused power outages that some New Orleanians are still feeling. If power outages caused you to lose food and you are a SNAP recipient, you may be able to recoup some of those costs! Fill out this simple application through the Department of Child and Family Services, and you may be able to have SNAP benefits restored to your card. After you do that, don’ t forget to double your dollars with Market Match at the Crescent City Farmers Markets, and restock on fresh, local fruits and vegetables! |
VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Hurricane Vendor UpdatesWhile we are fortunate to report that all market staff and vendors are safe and in good health, many are without power and have suffered structural damage and crop loss following Hurricane Zeta or any number of preceding weather systems this season. 2020 is proving to be a difficult year, but nevertheless, we persist together. Now is the time to support local farmers markets, like CCFM, that continue to provide opportunities for small farmers and food producers to sell what they harvest and produce, while they rebuild their businesses. By shopping at farmers markets, you keep local dollars circulating in the community and support the local economy! Here are some ways you can support our local food system:

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:Traditional Kimchi (Napa Cabbage Kimchi)Kimchi, a staple in Korean cuisine, is a traditional side dish of salted and fermented vegetables, such as Napa cabbage and Korean radish, made with a widely varying selection of seasonings including gochugaru, spring onions, garlic, ginger, and jeotgal, etc. Korean-American home chef and blogger Hyosun knows her way around traditional Korean dishes and shows us how it’s done with this Traditional Kimchi featuring Napa cabbage. Fresh Napa cabbage is making its way into markets and can be found in both the CCFM and Market Mommas Club boxes this week!
